Welcome back to A New Life in the Van! In this episode of our motorhome travel vlog, we arrive in sunny southern Spain and spend the day exploring the beautiful marina town of Almerimar. We stay overnight at the popular Almerimar Harbour Motorhome Aire, one of the best located motorhome stopovers on the Costa de Almería, right next to the yachts and waterfront promenade. Join us as we take a relaxing walk around Almerimar Harbour, soaking up the views of luxury boats and discovering just how much it costs to buy a yacht or even a home in this stunning seaside location. We also share our honest thoughts on the facilities, pricing and location of this Spain motorhome aire, perfect for anyone planning a motorhome trip through Andalucía. During the day we enjoy a delicious lunch, check out a second motorhome parking option in Almerimar, and browse around a couple of local shops. There’s also a fun surprise when Julia takes part in a tombola and wins some brilliant prizes! This travel day wasn’t without its challenges though, as we notice one unexpected and unpleasant issue along the harbour walkway. If you’re looking for motorhome travel in Spain, campsite alternatives, harbour aire reviews, or inspiration for your next van life adventure, this video is for you. A couple visits Almerimar, Spain, securing a scenic motorhome pitch at the harbor. They explore the high-end marina, enjoy local dining and charity events, and evaluate parking facilities. While they appreciate the town's beauty and amenities, they note issues with basic facility maintenance and pet owner negligence.
Coming up, we find what we think is the perfect motorhome air,
but Julia discovers something absolutely disgusting in Almerimar.
Hey, hey, hey, how you doing? Well, check this out. See what I mean? It's foggy as hell.
Well, we're hoping this might burn off later. Is that road blocked? Was that the one you were
supposed to go down? No. Okay, so we've not got too far to go, but we can't really see that far
ahead of us. Sun's burnt off the old fog now, and there's a signpost to Almerimar.
Here we go. There's loads of these greenhouse things around again,
because obviously it's a brilliant place to grow veg around here. Hey, look at that. It's got a
cracking cycling path here, hasn't it? How good's that? It's a walking path as well. That's quite
good, because we've seen loads of people on scooters, and the vehicles go really close to
them. It's quite dangerous for them. Nice one. We're getting our first view of Almerimar down
here, so we're going to come around this road and head in towards the harbour where there is an air.
It's a paid-for air, but it's got electricity, so we're hopeful that we can get a slot, to be
honest. Now, whilst we're not that fussed about having electricity most of the time, it is quite
nice. I'll give my hair a good old hair dryer. Gary likes to charge everything up, don't you?
Here we go. Great Almerimar roundabout. So we're just coming into Almerimar now.
Looks really nice, actually. Oh, what have we got here? No camping or to caravans. Strictly forbidden.
Okay, so anyway, we're heading down to the air. We're very hopeful that we might get a spot. We
wanted to get down early for that reason, didn't we? Yeah, that's right. And the old fog seems to
have burnt off quite nicely, and it's 10 to 11. Fingers crossed somebody's left the air and left
a slot. It's a beautiful area, and there's a lovely golf course here. Gary's thinking
about moving here already now, because he's seen a golf course. It does look like a really nice
place, joking aside, doesn't it? It looks lovely. There's loads of stuff going on, so plenty of
restaurants and bits and pieces, I bet. Let's see if we can spot the air. We must be nearly there now,
Gary, are we? Right, there is another sign that's saying to go that way. It's tight as round here,
isn't it? Go right there. Yeah, you'll see the sign if you come around, look. Okay, and it says Porto with
motorhomes. So let's take that right. So maybe you go in that way. Oh, here we go. Look, there's another
sign here. Gosh, this looks amazing. Oh, please let's get a spot. This way for the motorhomes.
It's a little bit of a tight turn, isn't it? Oh, we've got many of the idea there.
20 euro. Okay, spotted that already. Oh, Gary, this looks amaze-wise.
What, on a bigger rig? Yeah, it'd be tight, wouldn't it? I don't know if we're going to
get in. Look at these beautiful boats. If you own one and want to take us out on it, just give us a
shout. Right, okay, let's see if there's a space. It is full, but there might be a little bit of a space.
Right, which way do you go? Oh, look, there's spaces here. Right, if you get in there,
you might get a sea view. Nice one. It's quite busy. There's loads of spaces here, actually.
Here we go, parking two, parking one. Right, so I'm not really sure what's going on here.
Gosh, it's a bit confusing, isn't it? They look confused as well, like us. I don't know what the
bloody hell's going on. So let's pull up here and I've got to see that sign, because it might
be a case of pay this or pay that. So I just spoke to this Spanish guy and he reckons you've got to
drive around to the waiting area and then go into the office, which is just over here. See this
building here? So I think that's what we're going to do. Oh, Gary's reversing. He's ready to get me.
I'm not insured, so it's not worth it. I really want to stay here because it looks great
and look at the day. It's getting lovely and bright and blue,
but we love a harbour. We'll go and see what the score is. We'll go and pay. I think it's 20 euros,
but we shall see. Look at this, that giant anchor. It's fabulous, isn't it? So here's the little
Port Officina. Let's go in. Oh, it's really gorgeous. Here's the reception, Gary.
Just in here. Just looking at their flag in the office and it looks like the England flag,
so I reckon you're secret England fans, aren't you?
Right, there's plenty of room. Everybody's got their old chairs out, look.
Although the Port Authority guy didn't say there was any rules, did he?
So maybe it's okay here. It wouldn't be the normal thing in an air, though.
We don't know which picture we're in. Gary was giving the numbers but forgotten it. I don't
think it's written on here, love. Is it written on there? That's what I'm saying. Okay, so we
think we're going into this one here. Oh, there's two there, though, isn't there? Oh, which one is
it? Oh, how nice is this? Can you remember the number, like thinking about it? That's 198.
Next, this is lovely, isn't it? Do you want to go and ask him? Right, that's the view.
And look how close you are to the bar and restaurants. Just literally right around there.
Okay, here's the map that they give you and this is the side that we're being parked on
and this is more expensive than this side. There's two sides. This one has no view
and this one does. You get full electric and it's 18 euros, so it's really good value. Now,
there is a toilet and a bathroom here, so there's a shower room there. It's underneath
one of the restaurants and if you want to use that, you have to either give them a document
or 20 euros in cash to be able to get the key for it. Gary's got it, so he's going to have a
look down there, so we'll show you that a little bit later on. But location-wise,
it couldn't be better. And it does feel quite level, but when you've got that as your view,
fantastic. Okay, not perfectly level. We do need to come up slightly at the front,
so we'll put a couple of chocks up, but nothing to write home about. This is pretty good. We're
over the moon now. It did seem a bit airy when you come in here, so easier to know slightly what
to do. It's really easy when you've done it the first time, isn't it? So basically, park up,
go in the office, do your business, pay the guy and he'll let you through the barrier.
And there's a couple of spaces, he said, because a few people have left this morning,
but I reckon if you're going to come down here, make sure you're down here
between 10 and 11-ish. So you've got that nice window where somebody's left and they've moved
off to somewhere else. Okay, rookie error. Make sure that you make a note of which pitch you're
in because we're next door. So we've got 198, I think the pitch number is. 128. 128, is it?
Oh, it looks a bit worn out on there. We might need to come over there a little bit, love, I
think. Yeah, a bit more central. And you're going to have to get the chocks on. I had a quick look
at the reader. Brilliant. So there's the setup. Now the electric box is just by that big rig there.
That sort of does everybody along here. Not bad size pitches though. We're fitting in nice and
easy. He's a massive guy and he's fitted in. But they're all right for the money, aren't they?
18 euros. That's pretty good, isn't it? We've got a German neighbour. Hi.
Wow. So here we are. We're parked up just there. You can see
there's the marina. We're going to take a little wander around. We'll take a walk around to the
other side. So we're going to be right nosy and check out the toilets now as well. I like to
see what they look like as well. There's a shower. It's underneath the restaurant or something that
we're saying. But we'll have a little mooch round here. I want to go and see what the other motor
looks like. The cheaper one without the view. There's restaurants all the way around the port,
but there's also like little souvenir shops. There's a bank. So much going on here. Oh,
little doggos are having a bit of a row. So there's a laundry as well here. It doesn't
look as if it's open at the moment. Is that an estate agent's love? Oh, it's a yacht broker,
is it? Yeah. What can't we afford? All of them? Are they really expensive? Well, I mean,
that catamaran that's near us, perhaps not as expensive as I thought it was. Well,
how much is it? Well, I don't, I can't find it on here, but another camera,
catamaran similar is going for €270,000. It's still at Bob Ross range. If it was €270,000
it's really surprising us. It's absolutely gorgeous. There's loads of like, um, little
boutiques as well, isn't there? Like clothing boutiques. So I think there's a lot of people
maybe with a few quid here. Um, it really, really reminds me a bit of Sotogrande, a bit of
Porta di Cesa, that kind of vibe about it. It's lovely. Asking to find the cheapest one. I don't
really want a boat because I can't, I can't even bear it for more than five minutes before I start
complaining that I feel sick. €59,000, that's still way too much. It's a lovely, it's a 36-foot
yacht, so it's probably a bit small to live in. I don't want to live in it, crikey. Oh no, it's
€49,500 there. Which one, for that red one? For that red one. €49,500. Yeah, it's a 40-foot,
so that's even bigger than the 36-foot. How old is it though? Uh, 1977. Good grief. Slightly,
slightly younger than me. So basically, opposite where we're parked, there is the toilets and
showers. Yeah, have we got a little key fob, have we? Let's have a quick look then. Can you open it
for me? Oh, oh gosh. All right love, thank you. He's got my showers, little Coke box, just like
that. It's a bit whippy. There's someone in here, so I didn't want to film as soon as I came in.
Three sinks, that's all right, and just a couple of toilets. To be honest, it's very basic, but
it, you know, it's okay. They do have a plug socket though, so I can plug my hairdryer in there if I
wanted to, but you've got electricity in the van anyway. Okay, a bit weird. There's no loo roll in
the toilet, but there is like a big one outside. I think you're supposed to take what you need and
go in. You wouldn't want a load of people out here, would you? Well, you're just like, you need
a right load of glass on the floor, so we're just trying to be careful. I've got my hand sanitiser.
But yeah, just need to move it into the edge. I don't want to start picking it up.
We don't want to cut our hands either. Yeah, so the port goes all the way around, doesn't it?
There's just tons of shops and restaurants, and yeah, we're going to walk around, right round
to the other side. Apparently it's quite far, but it doesn't feel far. It feels really nice
to walk it, doesn't it? It does, yeah. I'm quite enjoying this. It's a perfect day for it as well.
It's not too hot, but it is lovely and sunny. There's a right lovely little delicatessen shop
here as well. Looks nice. It's got all the old jamons hanging up, but it's got a really nice
selection of wine I can see. Oh, look at all of this. This looks great, doesn't it? I was like,
oh god, these are going to be dear, and then I was like 3190. I thought it was 3000. It's not. I
think it's 3190. It's not too bad, to be fair. 33. Oh, 1295. I do like the way they've done that.
These wines aren't that dear. It's a really nice shop. Oh, look, you can get it like...
you buy it by the litre, I think, or like a little glass bottle of it. 390 for that one, that Tinto.
490, that's the red. That's good, isn't it? Got like really nice little artisan cheeses and stuff.
Oh, it smells really nice in here as well.
Little estate agents with the prices here. There's a lovely duplex there.
That's really nice. Looks like it's got a bit of a sea view. 219,000. There's quite a few here.
They're not too badly priced. 217 San Miguel, so this looks like a duplex as well, doesn't it?
But they do seem to have sea views, don't they? Yeah. I'm loving some of these restaurants.
Oh, look, that's a nice restaurant, Gary. There's a little bottle of red wine on the table.
It's only for decoration, so they know what people like. I'll tell you what, some people though...
I mean, walking along, loveliest place ever. There's about three dog turds just there.
I mean, you wouldn't, would you? Just leave it on like the walkway. It's disgusting. Like,
pick up after your dog, people. What are you doing? You wouldn't have a ---- on the floor.
No. That's quite disgusting, isn't it? Yeah, it is. You call them out if you see it as well.
Oh, I've done that before. Remember when I called out that South African woman? Yeah.
She was like, oh my God, she had this massive Alsatian. And there used to be these really
lovely gardeners in a place in Spain that I used to live. And I said to her, you know,
you're not picking up after your dog. And she was like, I can't be bothered. I've had a long day.
I was like, well, that's a bit lazy, expecting someone else to do it. And she was like,
she was like really aggressive and really argumentative. And then she basically called
me fat. She said, why don't you just get on with your walk? You need it. So I tell you what you
need. You need a good punch in the face. That's what you need. Fog's coming in again now. Every
time I see the fog, I always want to sing that bloody Gazza song, you know, Fog on the Danes,
old man, old man. I don't know why. It goes right through my head. Fog on the Danes, old man.
Oh, look at this. Just spotted a really nice little quirky shop.
How cute is this? Lovely little Christmas bits. I'm going to have to have a little look in here.
This looks nice. Oh, look at the strawberry teacup. Oh, that's really cute, isn't it?
I don't know how much it is. Really cute little Christmas ornaments. These are £15.90 each.
That's about £14.50 each. It's quite, it's not cheap, but it has got some really unusual bits
and really nice if you want to get something unusual for your Christmas deckies.
What, you're not short of restaurants around here? We've, we've passed literally hundreds,
I reckon. This is so many restaurants and they're all different types as well. We've
just seen a really nice looking Chinese. Look how cute that looks. But I spy with my little
eye something beginning with C, Gary. Got a car boot you're going on. Oh, let's have a quick
butcher's. Oh, they might have some jigsaws. Proper love a jigsaw, I do. But I don't know if
I like a secondhand one. I like it. I like to be the first person. It's a small one. It's got a
few bits of clothes and stuff like that. To be honest, I don't need to buy anything. I just
always like having a look, see if I'm missing out on anything really. Oh, we just come across,
well, we stumbled across the Stumble Inn. Well, they do a roast lunch. Here we go. Traditional
Sunday roast here. £13.90. I actually really fancy that. Oh, Gary, I might have to, I don't
know if they've got any tables. That'd be quite nice. It's absolutely rammed. It must be quite
good. Right, we've got a table in this Stumble Inn. The ladies just shuffled a couple of tables
around. So we're right on top of everybody. These guys had this table and there's three of them
there. So they're going to sit there and we're here, but we are quite close to everyone. I hope
this roast is going to be worth it, Gary. I'm sure it will. I'm going to play the tombola,
which is right behind my chair. It's all different prizes. I've got nine tickets coming.
So it's for charity anyway. So it's Little Dogs and Cats charity and I'll see if I'm a winner.
Okay. It's got to end in a zero or a five to be a winner. 97. Forget it. It's not a winner.
Oh God, we'll have to speed this up. Oh, I've got a zero. So 130.
Let's have a look. Oh, 180. Oh God, I'm on a roll here, Gary. If it ends in a zero or ends in a five,
you get a prize. So, so far I've got two prizes. 208, no. Let's get a mixture.
300. Oh my God, I've got three. I've got three prizes. I've only spent three euros. 309. That's
not a winner. So Gary's talking to the guy that we took half his table off of him. 149, that's not.
And then let's have a look and see what else. No, that's not a winner. It seems like the white
ones are really lucky. I've got three on there. Right. Oh, 375 on the pink one. I've got four
prizes. Let's go see what I've won. So we're going to see what I've won. So I've won number 300.
Oh my God, I've won a box of bullet history. Wow. Okay. I've won number 130.
It's getting exciting, isn't it? Oh my God, a bottle of red wine.
No way. Oh, it's my favorite as well. A bottle of red wine. Gosh, this is looking good. I've
also won number 180. 180. Right. I don't know what I've won here. I've got 180.
Is it the thing that fell down? 180. And then I've got one more. 375. 180 and 375.
I've won another bottle of wine. I'm getting my Christmas wine in. And 375.
Oh, what have I won? Oh, it's a little Christmas decoration. Oh, look at that.
So what is the charity called?
Hold on a second. You raise money for what, sorry? If dogs and cats need any treatment,
we get all the cats and dogs neutered and then we raise the money to be able to get the dogs
adopted abroad in Germany. Oh, do you? Have you got a Facebook page or anything?
Oh, well, hey guys, thanks ever so much. That was the right lucky
haul for me, wasn't it? There we go. That's what it's called.
Canasta de Aura. Everything that they're making today, it goes to it.
Oh, this is wonderful. Right, old lucky haul. But if you are in the area and you want to support
that charity, you know, maybe look them up. They do some really good work rehoming these cats and
these dogs. But I've got white wine, red wine, a box of chocolates and an ornament for Christmas.
Talk about lucky. So we've got ourselves a glass of vino and a beer and we've ordered a roast each.
Gary's gone for the beef and I'm getting the lamb. Oh, check this out. Here's my lamb dish.
There's Gary's beef. We're happy, aren't we, bab? Oh, yes. So Gary's met someone that's actually
got a longer streak than him on Duolingo. He's way outstreaked. Dave's got 2,100 days on his
Duolingo. Gary's got a measly 400. 444. Yeah, it's nothing compared to big Dave.
OK, right round the harbour is the second motorhome there. Let's go and have a little
look in here. Check out times 12, which is the same as ours. Park in the waiting area and register
your camping car in the office. So there must be another office here, Gary. No, it's the same one.
Oh, is it? Yeah, same one. OK, so here's, right, the major difference here is you haven't got a
view. OK, so this is what the second one looks like. You're basically facing this wall. There
is, obviously, the sea beyond it, so they might have a bit of a view. The first lot, because of
the massive wall there. It's a thick wall, isn't there? Yeah, that's true. And it is a bit cheaper
here. We don't know how cheap, but it is a little cheaper. All the walls around it have been kind
of graffitied, but I suppose you could say they've been artistically graffitied, because they're not
as bad as some are, though. But yeah, this is it. You're still in walking distance to all the bars
and shops, etc, and this will be a few quid less. Has it got electric, do you think?
Doesn't look like it has. No. OK, well, we can see some wiring, so there is electric, look, you'll
see at the points. So it is a bit cheaper. Look, if you can't get in the other one, I'd still come
here, wouldn't you? Yeah, absolutely. Oh, we've had a lovely day, haven't we? We've had a great day.
We've just come out to get the sunset, and you've kind of got to walk to the end
to see the sunset. It's just over here, at the end of the air. You'll see it's behind us.
And a big shout out to Frank and Janet, who we've just met, a couple of subscribers. Always good to
bump into people that subscribe, isn't it? Nice to meet you guys, but this is absolutely magic.
I was coming to watch the sunset and somebody has just literally left this
---- here. I mean, there's no need of that, is there, Bab? It's a joke, isn't it? Look at the
state of that. I feel like we need to pick it up, but where's the bin? Well, good morning. We slept
pretty well. We did, didn't we? We'd been lounging around this morning a bit, and then we had a bit
of a shower, and that was nice. Managed to wash the air, got it down for five minutes while it's
not too hot. But you did have a bit of a problem handing the key back. Well, I say a problem.
It was just, there was about 15 people in the queue, all doing things like paying mooring fees,
because obviously it's boat and motorhome, and it just took a long, long time. So I think if you are
going to hand your key back in and you need to be off, make sure you're up and about early,
get the key handed back, I would say. Because what time are we on now? We're on quarter past
eleven now. Yeah, so everybody was handing stuff in about eleven o'clock. No, it must have been
about quarter to eleven, mustn't it? You went up there. He was gone for ages. I was thinking
I always got chatting to someone, but no, he was just in a queue. Anyway, so we've had a really
good stay here, and we do recommend it. I do think you feel a little bit like, it is a bit of a car
park vibe to it, isn't it? Right, we're just going to do the emptying, aren't we? We know where the
black and the grey is. Is the water by it? It must be, but I've not seen it. Yeah, we couldn't see
the water. Right, we'll go and find that out now, and let's see what the score is. So we're just
reversing out now. It's a little tight because, you know, everyone's quite close on, although we
were quite far over this side, weren't we? There's your pitch, you can see. It's pretty busy. People
are enjoying it though. It is a good spot, and there's plenty of restaurants. So as you come up
and you're heading towards the end, we'll get to the black and the grey waste. What did the lady
say? You've got a ringer before you leave. Yeah, before I leave, I've got to phone the number
for the office so that she can let us out. The grey's right under us now. Okay, is that the black?
The toilet? That's the black, yeah. Okay, I wasn't really expecting the black to be an actual toilet.
There you go, there's the black one. That's the water just to clear it out. Oh look, there's a
paintbrush if you need it. We can't see where the water is though. Gary's just doing the grey.
Okay, so your grey and your black is here, but then just along here is your fresh water.
So it's a hose pipe. You can see just on that post there. So I think we're going to go the other side
and fill it up on the way out. So Gary's just having a look at the invoice. There's a number
on it. It's going to have to give it a call so she can open the barrier and let us out.
So Gary's just phoned the woman. She wants your registration number of your vehicle
in order to let you out. So you have to phone her, give her the registration and she'll open the gate.
But she's still not opened it. And we're through. Fabulous Gary.
I'm just going to get the water. See where that guy is? Yeah. It's there. Where those people are?
Yeah, I think so because it was a hose. It's what I was saying to you. See that blue hose? Yeah.
That's it. It spread that all up for him. Oh gosh, I'm filming and this is my friend Beata.
A massive shout out to our German friend. Her husband took a nasty fall. He was just coming
out of the air and he fell down. They had to call an ambulance and everything. So they're here for
another couple of days but very soon they're heading off to Morocco and then they're going
to the States next year via Halifax. So fair play to them. They're so funny aren't they?
So big shout out to you honey. Great to meet you. Right, so what we're going to do next on the
is a Q&A aren't we honey? Yes we are. So if you've got any questions, it can be anything. I mean if
it's very personal, we ain't going to answer it. Don't matter how nice it's posed. Joking aside,
anything about like us on traveling, anything about moving to Spain, our life. We're open to
any questions. What it's like being in the van. You know, if you've got any questions,
please put them forward and we're going to create a video based upon your questions.
That's it for this road trip. We've really enjoyed the Almeria coastal regions haven't we?
Really nice. That's such a laugh. I mean I don't know what's our favorite. I think it might be
Roquetes de Mar. I agree. And I'm not being funny. I wasn't expecting to even like it.
Complete surprise. Right, that's it for us now isn't it? So have a fantastic week everyone. We'll
see you on the next vlog. Love you loads everyone. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to give us a like,
maybe a hi. Even subscribe, the holy grail itself if you're not already subscribed.
Thanks for being on our journey with us and we'll see you again next time. Take care.
