Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently addressed international partners and airlines using Russian airspace. The Ukrainian leader warned them that Russian skies would soon become effectively closed.
According to The Independent, Zelenskyy's statement could influence Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's thinking and the future of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Moreover, analysts are confident that closing the skies over Russia could push Putin toward negotiations.
"Drones in Russia's skies will be so numerous that it's worth paying attention to. Although Russian authorities aren't properly reporting this, Russian skies will de facto be closed: the war unleashed by Russia is closing its skies," the Ukrainian president said. Putin responded by claiming that such comments were tantamount to "declaring state terrorism."
The publication noted that many international airlines continue to operate flights to Russian airports, especially to major cities. Although Zelenskyy emphasized that civilian aircraft will not be targeted, experts believe his statements could cause alarm among commercial airlines continuing to operate in Russia.
Airlines that have maintained profitable routes linking Russia with Asia, the Middle East and Latin America throughout the conflict include Emirates, Air China, Turkish Airlines, Flydubai, Qatar and Etihad Airways. Katya Glod, deputy head of the foreign policy department at the New Eurasian Strategies Center, told reporters that there are two main reasons why Zelenskyy is making this threat. "Of course, Zelenskyy is exaggerating in part – this closure is in no way similar to how Ukrainian airspace was closed... As Ukrainian drone strikes intensify, Zelenskyy likely saw this as a good PR moment – a signal to everyone using Russian airspace that they will suffer if they continue to do so," she explained.
Glod added that there may also be a more strategic element behind the Ukrainian president's logic. She is certain that Ukraine is seeking to strike a blow against the Russian economy and military machine. "If getting to Moscow by plane becomes difficult, this will have significant financial consequences," the expert emphasized. Glod stated that, until now, Putin had managed to shield Russians from the consequences of the war he unleashed. However, in recent months, Ukraine's attacks have truly made Russians feel the effects of the war firsthand. The expert noted that Putin is stubborn and does not truly listen to the government's advice, but, according to her, the Russian leader is fully aware of what his entourage thinks.
"If it harms their interests, the oligarchs around Putin may eventually push him to start negotiations to end the war," Glod said. The expert also noted that increased drone strikes on Russian territory could also impact Europe. While Ukraine is increasing its defense capabilities, Moscow is increasing its threats against Europe.
"While NATO does welcome Zelenskyy's ability to harm Russia, this damage is also a source of concern," the expert emphasized.
