Ukraine paralyzes air traffic in Russia; foreign airlines refuse Russian skies

Ukraine is increasing pressure on Russia, trying to force foreign airlines to stop flying in Russian airspace . This is according to a report in the German newspaper Handelsblatt , which analyzes the potential consequences of the warning issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The publication recalls that on September 1, Zelenskyy called on airlines not to use Russian airspace due to Ukraine's large-scale use of drones. Meanwhile, Ukraine plans to significantly increase the intensity of its strikes: according to the president, the number of drones used against Russia daily should increase from approximately 300 to 1,000.
"We want to warn every airline using Russian airspace, every insurer, and everyone who still uses important Russian airports: Russian skies will become completely dangerous," Zelenskyy said in a video address. Soon after, some airlines began adjusting their routes. Pegasus Airlines flights to Moscow were diverted, and Flydubai changed its flight plan. Meanwhile, the Russian aviation authority temporarily restricted nighttime traffic at Moscow's Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Sheremetyevo airports.
At the same time, as Handelsblatt notes, most carriers are not yet ready to completely abandon flights through Russia. Following the start of a full-scale invasion in February 2022, IAG, Air France-KLM, and Lufthansa are forced to bypass Russian airspace on their routes to Asia. Meanwhile, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, and a number of Chinese carriers continue to operate direct routes.
This offers them economic advantages, as it reduces fuel costs and flight duration. Therefore, the author of the publication notes, abandoning Russian airspace could be a serious commercial decision for such companies.
Qatar Airways stated that it is constantly assessing the situation and will adjust its operations as necessary. Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Turkish Airlines did not respond directly to Handelsblatt's request for comment. Meanwhile, some carriers are warning passengers of possible flight delays and some cancellations due to drone attacks.
The Russian Ministry of Transport and aviation authorities refuted the Ukrainian side's assessment, stating that foreign airlines had been provided with information about security measures in Russian airspace.
However, as the publication notes, the risks to civil aviation are not limited to a possible collision between an aircraft and a drone. Perhaps the main danger actually comes from Russian air defense actions. The European Aviation Safety Agency has long been drawing attention to this issue, specifically citing the downing of an Azerbaijan Airlines flight by Chechen air defenses in December 2024.
The International Civil Aviation Organization also highlighted additional risks. It assessed that passenger aircraft could be at risk from long-range weapons, drones, radio jamming, and air defense systems.
