Since May 2022, Donbas has remained Russia's primary military target. Moscow has concentrated a significant portion of its forces and firepower in this industrial region. OSINT researcher Clément Molin analyzed the battle for Donbas from the perspective of its strategic significance. The battle for Donbas has been going on for 13 years. Russia hopes to capture the region's last major cities—Kramatorsk, Slovyansk, Druzhkovka, Dobropillya, and Liman—in the coming years.
The fighting has inflicted severe damage on Donbas, destroying a significant portion of its mines and industrial infrastructure, and resulting in the deaths and displacement of numerous residents. For three years now, the Russian army has been attempting to advance through territory that Ukraine had already heavily fortified. After their breakthrough in May 2024, Russian forces managed to somewhat improve their position in the southwestern part of the region, near Pokrovsk. However, this has left them with virtually no opportunity to further seize the entire Donbas.
Now Russian forces are literally forced to fight for every city, town, and mine. This is precisely how the fighting unfolded in Toretsk, where it lasted for about a year; in Pokrovsk, also for about a year; and in Konstantinovka, for about a year.
For Ukraine, the remaining part of Donbas is of paramount strategic importance, primarily due to the powerful defensive fortifications located there. They hinder the further advance of Russian troops toward the agricultural regions of central Ukraine, as well as the densely populated and economically important Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
The battle for Donbas will likely remain one of the longest and bloodiest campaigns of the war. After one city falls, fighting will continue for the next. However, there's no guarantee that Russia won't try to advance further.
In particular, Moscow may need control over the Dnieper's resources to restore the industry and mines of Donbass.
The expert also published a map of the Russian offensive in Donbas. Territories captured by Moscow in 2024 are marked in red, in 2025 in orange, and in 2026 in yellow.
