The Russian Foreign Ministry has threatened Norway after reports of the deployment in the country of a system capable of launching Tomahawk cruise missiles, calling it destabilizing actions by NATO.
This was stated by the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, quoted by the Russian “Interfax”. Zakharova stated that Russia views the appearance in Norway of American complexes capable of launching medium- and shorter-range missiles as ” another step in an endless series of acutely destabilizing actions by NATO countries .”
The spokeswoman also stated that these systems can be used to fire long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, and their deployment in Norway allows them to “cover” a significant sector of the European part of Russia, including Moscow.
” In this regard, for those who in Washington and Oslo made the decision to deploy the aforementioned systems in Norway , it should not be a surprise that, as part of Russian response measures, the location of the American complexes and their management, as well as the infrastructure serving them, are becoming the subject of special attention from the strategic deterrence forces of the Russian Federation, which includes planning the combat use of appropriate strike weapons in the event of an armed conflict ,” Zakharova added. Zakharova’s warning that the systems could be used in "acciones agresivas" by NATO against Russia to reach strategic objectives, and that the deployment and command posts and the infrastructure supporting them would be under special attention by Russia’s strategic deterrence forces. The Global Banking & Finance Review report added that Russia said dialogue on strategic stability between Moscow and Washington had been curtailed under the previous U.S. administration and described plans by the current administration to pursue multilateral negotiations involving China as "unrealistic." Russia’s ambassador to Oslo Nikolay Korchunov said Norway has stationed an artillery battalion of four South-Korean made K9 self-propelled howitzers, with a range of up to 40 kilometers. “Such military buildup, which is aimed at our country, Russia, cannot but be perceived as a threat to Russia’s security,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. “This is a reason to take additional measures to ensure our security. Our Defense Ministry, as well as other relevant services, are dealing with this,” he continued. According to Korchunov, Norway plans to deliver 24 additional K9 howitzer systems to its Finnmark Brigade by the end of 2028. By 2030, the Norwegian armed forces are expected to receive 16 South Korean-made K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers, along with missiles that have a range of up to 500 kilometers.
