Recently, Ukrainian Defense Forces launched airstrikes against military and strategic targets in Russia's Saratov region. According to preliminary information, Ukrainian UAVs attacked the Engels military airfield. An air raid alert was issued locally in the Saratov region at approximately 3:25 a.m. on September 8. Aircraft flights were temporarily restricted at Saratov Airport. Shortly thereafter, residents of Saratov and Engels heard the first explosions. Ukrainian drones are believed to have attacked a military airfield in Engels, where Russian Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers are based. Saratov Region Governor Roman Busargin acknowledged that Ukraine struck targets in the Russian region on the night of September 8. He said the attack caused damage to infrastructure. However, the governor did not specify which infrastructure he was referring to. Tu-95MS and Tu-160 fighter jets based in Engels are participating in cruise missile strikes against Ukraine. Therefore, Engels Airfield is a legitimate target for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukrainian Defense Forces have repeatedly attacked this military facility.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that service members from the Alpha special unit of Ukraine's Security Service hit a Russian Tu-95MS strategic missile-carrying bomber at the Engels airbase in Russia's Saratov region. The head of state described the operation by Ukraine's Security Service's Alpha unit in Russia's Engels. "In Russia's Engels, Alpha fighters of Ukraine's Security Service hit a Tu-95MS missile carrier. These are the aircraft that strike Ukraine," he said. As is well known, Engels Air Base is a key base for Russia's strategic aviation. Tu-95MS, Tu-22M3, and Tu-160 bombers are stationed there, and the site also hosts depots with FAB and KAB aerial bombs and cruise missiles. Aircraft that carry out missile strikes on Ukraine take off from this airfield. The Tu-95MS is a strategic missile-carrying bomber that Russian forces use to launch cruise missiles at Ukraine. Recall, in Saratov, Russia, civilian infrastructure was damaged as a result of a drone attack, Roman Busargin, governor of Russia’s Saratov region, an aggressor state, reported. According to him, there is preliminary information about casualties, but the Russian authorities did not specify their number or health condition. Busargin said that the threat of an unmanned aerial vehicle attack was detected on the morning of September 8. Rescue services are working at the strike sites to eliminate the consequences of the attack. Russia’s Defense Ministry, of the aggressor state, had earlier warned of possible threats in certain locations and placed emergency services on full alert. The Russian authorities did not release additional information about the scale of the destruction. The governor of the Saratov region described the attack as Ukrainian. Anadolu Agency notes that the strike occurred after the end of a three-day temporary ceasefire that had been observed during the recent visit to the region by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
