This was STRESSFUL...

Thank God for that as the Padres pull off the victory against the Nationals on a game that
was kind of ugly but also good in some aspects. What are those aspects that were good? What are
those aspects that are bad? Let's talk about it. Hi, welcome back to another episode of Padres
Digest with your host Andrew. Today was a roller coaster. Today I feel like a lot of us probably
lost hope and I don't really blame you but sometimes things work out and you just gotta
wait for them to happen. I don't know. I'm just glad we won. I'm just glad we won.
Well, before we get too deep into the video, please subscribe as always,
follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Padres Digest. For starters, obviously I work on Tuesday so I
missed basically the entire game except for the last part where we actually scored. So I want
to say today's game was thanks to me. I am the reason we won because when I started watching,
we scored four runs. So you're welcome. Please praise me in the comments. But I watched the
but my feelings about this game are the same feelings I've had for a couple of games recently
is that I'm glad we won but I still think there are things we definitely need to iron out.
For example, how are we getting no hit into the fifth inning against a guy who had a what
four or five ERA? 5.26 ERA and a guy with a 5.51 ERA. Four strikeouts against him.
Why are we getting no hit? Why are we getting no hit? Like it's that like I'm glad we won.
I'm glad we scored. I'm glad we made a win. But we made a win. We got a win. But
why? You know what I mean? Like I still think there's things about this offense that
need to be fixed and ironed out. These kind of games remind me I don't remember when exactly
it was during this season. But there was a stretch in the season where we weren't playing
great at all. We were only winning by like pure luck and like pure small ball. And it was working
for a while. But like we all were like, this is not sustainable. And then eventually we cratered.
So it's probably like what? July, June, July, something like that. I don't remember exactly
when. I don't want to say this gives me the same vibes because I feel like we're better than we
were at that time right now. But again, I just feel like only a few players are really contributing
on these wins, which is fine. But I kind of hope for more of a team effort with this team because
I feel like when we're at our best is when everyone's clicking when everyone which is
obviously a super obvious statement, don't get me wrong. But the Padres can play together as a team
and win together as a team. And I feel like right now we've had some superstar performances. Right
now Camposano is carrying us. And I love that. I love Camposano for that. He's the reason we beat
the Yankees. He is the reason I don't say he's a reason we won today. But he's the reason we're
not getting no hit. And we broke the lead. And he's been playing out of his mind defensively. So
full shout out to Camposano for carrying us. But I also like that our stars are also kind of
doing their job. So, you know, I love it. I love it. Like, again, I'm not trying to complain. I'm
happy that we're winning games. But this is a nationals and we're getting no hit by the nationals.
Once we start playing the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks at the end of the year, like,
this is not the kind of level of ball we can bring. The Diamondbacks are gonna get back their entire
rotation. I think this series, like everyone who was injured is coming back right now. So
we're gonna need to step it up a little bit more. Right? I'm happy we're still technically
tied, but not really. Like, we have the same amount of losses. Nope. Same amount of losses.
But because they played a game more than us, they, you know, are ahead of us. But yeah,
I want these numbers to go down and this number to stay up. And they're playing the Royals right
now. So maybe not till next series. But overall, a fine day. Machado, good job. Thank you for,
you know, I'm just glad the pitcher missed the ground ball. Let's put it that way.
But nice job, Ty France. Nice job, Jackson Merrill. I like, almost had a three-run home run,
but you know, we'll take it. We'll take any RBI. Camposano's literally the GOAT.
And everyone else is just fine. Everyone else is just fine. I mean, Tati's got a run with the
walk, but you also had a double play. So, you know, cool. Austin Hayes, thank you for not
screwing it up. But you know, a win's a win. A win's a win. But the big thing I also want to
talk about today is Casey Mize. He didn't take the win, but Casey Mize over here, right? So let
me bring that up. So I feel like this is one of the better Casey Mize outings, but not his best
outing. And I still think he can do better. So 5.2 innings pitched, three earned runs, four hits,
seven strikeouts, one walk, and then one home run. 57.8% strikes. A little wild still, but 13 whiffs.
You can't complain about that. That's a lot of whiffs, right? Now, technically it is three,
but in my heart, it is one, and then Randy Vasquez kind of screwed him a little bit.
But we did pull him because we had more things than Randy Vasquez, I'm pretty sure, or something
like that. Whatever Craig Stammen's reasoning is. Like, I don't blame him for taking out Casey Mize,
but whatever. What happens, happens, right? But this is the kind of game I want to see for Casey
Mize, right? A little wild, obviously. Like, a little wild. A little, little, little, little,
everywhere. But that's fine, right? His stuff overall was average, 100. But good slider,
good foreseem. But it did kind of get hit hard. So his best pitches are getting hit,
but pretty good whiff on the slider. Everything else was eh on the foreseem,
but the splitter looked nasty today. Nasty, nasty splitter. 0.027 expected weighted on-base contact,
so basically nobody hit it. Whiff 60, chase 52. Sinker had a chase of 40. Whiff of zero,
but that's fine. Got a little too hard hit, but you know, it worked, right? Not his best game,
like I said, but it worked. Kind of like Michael King the other day. Like, he didn't have his best
stuff, but they kept him off the board, or he kept them off the board, and that's fine,
right? Results, this is a results-based business. As long as you're getting results, that's good.
Now, I also saw, I saw something on Twitter, and I don't know where I found it,
because I couldn't find it again. But they were talking about how, let me see if I can find it
real quick, actually. Okay, found it. Well, I didn't find the exact tweet, but basically the
same thing, right? At a trade deadline, scouts following Casey Mize were convinced his groin
was injured, causing his market to sour pretty hard at Jeff Poisson. So that kind of actually
makes a lot of sense. So, I, my reaction to this is, I feel like Casey Mize wasn't our primary
target, but AJ Preller couldn't get anyone else, so we settled for Casey Mize. And saying we
settled for Casey Mize, who was a really good pitcher before this, but does have an injury
history, I don't want to say we settled, because again, he's good. Like, he can be good, right?
But it kind of feels that way. So that's kind of like why we saw the trade get announced after
the deadline, because it was like a last second thing. We probably threw it together within the
last hour with the Tigers. So it makes sense that he wasn't, you know, our first trade pick,
or our first trade option. I feel like he was, you know, plan D or something. But again,
he's, he can, he can be good. We saw it today, we saw it against the Guardians,
and that's pretty much it. But we can see him be good. So that's my two cents on that.
But overall, a nice job. And then Randy Vasquez, I feel like he did pretty a-okay. But, you know,
getting a double isn't great, but everything else is pretty a-okay. Good chase, zone percentage,
rating overall. Cool. Sinker, whatever. Got him two earned runs against Mize, but
a fine day for Randy Vasquez, who's now kind of lost his job. But since we're not going to have
a lot of days off, I think next week, starting next week, we might switch to a six-man rotation,
which is great, in my opinion. Because, you know, we got him, why not use him? You know what I mean?
So yeah, those are my reactions to that. But overall, again, a good game, but I think we can
do better overall. And I think there's still some things we got to work out. But what do you guys
think? Do you think Casey Mize had a good game today? Or are you still very disappointed in him?
How do you feel about Camposano? Is Camposano literally the GOAT? And how do you feel about
the offense? Do you think the offense was good today? Bad today? A mix of both? Started good?
Or started bad, started good? Started bad. You know what I mean. Started bad, finished good.
Whatever. English is hard. I'm tired. Going to bed. Good night. Let me know how you feel.
