Evidence of a severe socioeconomic crisis is mounting in Iran, accompanied by heightened security measures due to the Iranian regime's fears of potential popular unrest. According to the Iranian opposition, special forces and plainclothes agents have already been deployed near key gas stations and major markets in Tehran. Mako writes about this . One of the main manifestations of the chaos has been the severe fuel shortage. Social media posts are sharing images of massive queues at gas stations in Tehran, Isfahan, and other cities, where drivers are forced to wait for hours. In addition to the shortage, there are complaints about the quality of gasoline: according to reports, it is being diluted with water, which has already caused thousands of vehicle breakdowns. There are also allegations that petrochemical waste is being poured into the fuel tanks of trucks, threatening logistics and food transportation.
The fuel crisis has triggered a chain reaction. A silent strike is underway at cargo terminals in Isfahan and Bandar Abbas, and many trucks are simply grounded. This has led to shortages and a sharp rise in prices for vegetables, fruits, and grains. Wholesale and retail prices for vegetables, meat, and dairy products have jumped by 100–150%. Due to the high instability, suppliers are canceling long-term contracts. The price of red meat has reached 1.2 million tomans per kilogram, making it an unaffordable delicacy for millions of families.
The reason for this price increase is the continuous decline of the Iranian currency. After the dollar exchange rate on the free market exceeded 221,000 tomans, the minimum wage in the country fell to the equivalent of less than $60 per month. The opposition notes that citizens are buying food on credit and in minimal portions, and the situation has shifted from the "poverty line" to the "physical survival line."
The situation is exacerbated by regular power outages during the height of the summer heat. Without refrigeration, food spoils and equipment breaks in stores, while chickens at poultry farms have died en masse due to ventilation failures, causing farmers enormous losses. Against this backdrop, a video from the Iranian branch of the International Network of Iranian Opposition sparked public anger: while the population is experiencing bread shortages, members of the Basij paramilitary group are being given special coupons for dozens of free loaves of bread at bakeries. The country's security forces fear a repeat of the large-scale protests of 2019 and are preparing to suppress potential unrest.
