Wilcot is an ancient village in Wiltshire, lying just northwest of Pewsey in the beautiful Vale of Pewsey.

The village has a remarkably long history. The name Wilcot appears in records as early as 940, more than a century before the Norman Conquest.

By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, a community was already established here around the church and manor. The manor was held by Edward of Salisbury and later passed to Bradenstoke Priory, which retained it until the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

At the historic heart of the village stands the Church of the Holy Cross. A church at Wilcot was described as new in the Domesday Book, although the building was subsequently rebuilt. Parts of the present church have medieval origins, including a 12th century chancel arch and a tower dating from the 15th century.

The church has survived a rather dramatic history. In 1876, sparks from the chimney of neighbouring Wilcot Manor started a fire that badly damaged the building. It was rebuilt later that year.

Wilcot itself developed in two distinct areas. The older part grew around the church and manor, while cottages were later built around the large village green. Many of the houses and cottages seen today date from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Kennet & Avon Canal also passes through the parish. Built here by 1810, it brought another chapter to Wilcot's history. Nearby is an unusual suspension footbridge dating from 1845, designed by James Dredge – one of only a small number of bridges of its type to survive.

Wilcot even has a connection to Hollywood. Actor David Niven briefly lived at Wilcot Manor around 1950.

Today, Wilcot remains surrounded by the beautiful landscape of the Vale of Pewsey.
