The Penguins Have Found Their NEXT Superstar...
Sep 15, 2026
Have the Pittsburgh Penguins found their next superstar in
Prospect Bill Zonnin. He had a very very strong game in their win in their first prospect tournament game against the Columbus Blue Jackets
We're gonna be talking about Bill Zonnin's success with the team's
Organizations thus far if he can make the NHL this season and more on today's edition of Penguin's Digest. Hello everyone
Welcome back to the channel. My name is Nikash Ganguly. Hope you guys are having a great day a great morning
I'm gonna pull this in the morning whenever you guys are watching this
We're in kind of the swing of things now with the with the Penguins in the NHL season
Training camps are going start to begin very very soon
media day has happened all the prospect tournaments are going on or the rookie camps, whatever you want to call them and
The bills on and seems to be a pretty significant standout in the Penguins first game where they took a win over the Columbus Blue Jackets
they believe it was a 2-1 win in the shootout and
They outshot the Columbus Blue Jackets by a score of like 52 to 26
But before we get into the majority of that make sure I do of course subscribe to the channel
We are currently at 67.5% of viewers who are not subscribed to Penguins Digest
So if you are on that large portion of viewers who are not subscribed hit that subscribe button
It's really easy. It helps me out and helps everyone at Digest Media as the NHL season kicks off
We'll be coming at you with a load of content, but let's get into it
This is an article from the Penguins Post-Gazette. Bill Zonnin excelled in Penguins
Penguins Prospect Tournament win. Could he make an NHL push? This is from I think
King Johnson or King Jamison. I actually can't read it
The font is too small on the screen right now, but I will get to that. Penguins youngsters defeated Columbus
2-1 in a shootout. So let's talk about this. Let's look at
This first quote from Zonnin. He was talking about his game. He said from day one
I came from a family where we're hard workers. So I feel like every time I'm out there
I just got to give it give it my all every puck paddle every faceoff
I want to win and that that kind of goes to what the article was
discussing
Some interesting background about Zonnin though
this is actually his first training camp in Pittsburgh a
Preseason injury this from the article with his QMJHL team robbed him of that opportunity last season made a brief return in November
But so did the injury and he didn't get to truly get a season start until late December and Zonnin
He's a really good player. I talked to I talked about him
When the Penguins actually did sign him there's a video on that on the channel
I think he's gonna be a very successful player for the Penguins a late round draft pick who I think has a lot of tools
To play in the league for a pretty long time. I think
He didn't score any goals or get any points in today's game
But he just did look better than a lot of the other Penguins prospects according to everything I read as well
So I think someone like Bill Zonnin could be a prospect to look out for maybe not gonna be a high leverage super crazy guy
But I think he could be a superstar in his own right kind of excelling at the things
He does the best and just kind of looking at the lines here
Obviously some of you I mean even me I'm not we're not gonna recognize all the names here
I did a video on the bottom right playing defenseman Peyton Kittles a couple days ago
But there's also a Bill Zonnin was the first time signing today with I believe that's Tanner Howe and Mikhail Ilyin
Mikhail Ilyin was someone who signed I believe from Russia during the season last year
There's a video on him also on the channel
And yeah, it was it was a pretty good game from Zonnin and I did also read that number 32 there Galvis
He had a very good game
He was kind of the standout for the Penguins throughout the the game here
And I think there's only a couple more tournaments in their in their prospect
Sorry a couple more games in their prospect tournament, but let's get back to Zonnin here
So this was another quote he had
He said I'm a 200 foot player. I can bring some physicality. I can bring some grit
I feel like if I do that then the goals and points the offensive game is gonna come and I honestly respect this take
From him. I think it is kind of a good way to look at it
Especially when you're looking at the Penguins depth chart, which is you know, pretty pretty deep right now
It doesn't feel like he's gonna be able to make the team, you know
Kind of immediately obviously this may not be what the line was gonna look like on day one because right now this doesn't have
Obviously, it doesn't have Evgeny Malkin on second line right wing which is where he will be playing
But if he's gonna be center you you have right now
Obviously Sidney Crosby's blocking you with Sidney Crosby. Ben Kittle super young
He's a better player right now
and then you're kind of looking at Tommy Novak and Conor Dewar in terms of players who you could
maybe take over if you're gonna be a call-up later in the season or next year or maybe somehow he has an
Insane training camp where he looks really good this year, but in terms of just you know, the forwards
I think he's gonna be a guy that's gonna be very successful in the bottom six
if we kind of take a look at his
His production in down in the QMJ show obviously injury-riddled season last year wasn't as successful as he wanted to be
You can see there. He had 46 points 14 goals in 35 games prior to that though
He did have some decent production 83 points in 64 games 28 goals
But obviously I think if he plays 30 more games
He racks up a load of points and obviously you can contribute, you know a lack not a lack of production
But lesser production to him coming off an injury missing training camp all that stuff
I'm sure an NHL training camp would have improved his production in the QMJ show as well
but in the past as well of it almost point a game there he only had two goals, but uh
15 points in 17 games was pretty solid and then over the course of the season was a plus 24 and then
He comes to the Wolfsbury Scrabin Penguins for their playoff runner
I believe they lost to the Toronto Marlies in the conference finals plays well for his time in the AHL
Obviously just stepping in there probably a little bit of a different game than the queue
Where he was dominant of seven points in 11 games, so not bad at all
I think he's gonna go down to the AHL and have a pretty successful season in my opinion. Obviously, he is signed to his
entry-level contract
More oh, I mean here's his left wing on on on from this is from Puffpedia
But I think he does play majority center. Obviously, he was center on the
prospect team today
Won 1 million dollars. So obviously, you know the rookie rookie scale contract there and then you're one of three
Which I don't think will get burned unless he does get called up
But I think it could be a pretty important player for the Penguins kind of down the stretch here
I do I do like what he is going for
In terms of just showing that grittiness
I think that could be super important for the Penguins because for me right now, they kind of have a lot of
Like really skilled prospects
I think someone like zoning it can be cut can kind of stand out for his
You know attentions to defensive game and physicality and now I know a lot of people might hear physicality and Graham be like, okay
What's this guy skills? I think he's gonna be a skilled player. The production is there
I think you're looking at a guy who's going to be pretty successful at the NHL level
For a decent amount of time. This is what his a coach said. Oh, this is from
I'm trying to remember right now. Those first guy had coached Kirk McDonald who coached the prospect team as well
He said Bill did a great job their line create a lot of offense. He's very smart away from the puck
I trust you for a younger guy
You can see the experience from the playoffs last year again
Like I talked about really successful HL playoffs for him and a decent class for the Wolfsburg fan
Penguins fortunately, they didn't get to go all the way but you know
A decent season for a pretty young team and it's gonna continue on that way for sure
now if we kind of look at um, I
Think already pull this one up if we kind of look at what the Athletic was talking about
This is a this is a really long really long quote
I don't even know if it'll it'll all show up here
But says on and checks a lot of boxes this from Corey Plowman on the Athletic during the Penguins prospect rankings
Actually, it's on and checks a lot of boxes
He's a big fast center with the skating stride that will easily translate to the NHL
He has a good stick. He has good stick skills and create offense on the move
He has been a big store in the QMJ shell, but I wouldn't call him an overly instinctive offensive type
He can make some plays and has a decent shot too, but it looks more like secondary skill at the top level
He works well enough off the puck and could have a two-way value as a pro
It could be a bottom six center. So again if we kind of take a look at
Sorry the Penguins depth chart here
As I said someone who can maybe fill in in that 3c spot at when the time comes cuz
You know what? Eventually Sydney Crosby's eventually he's gonna retire. I don't know that's gonna be years from now
I think at some point we'll see Zonni and Crosby on the same team
I think Crosby's gonna play with a new era penguins at some like a whole new era penguins at some point
But once Ben Kindle becomes that second line center, which we all think he'll become
I think Zonni is gonna be a guy the Penguins are gonna tap to become that third line center
But anyways guys, let me know what you think about bills on its future with the team
I was gonna be a super successful player and I said super sure the beginning
Maybe in his own right as that 3c possible to see but to me, I believe in his skill
It looks like he you know, he has a lot of work ethic built into him
I know a lot of these guys do but
Again, I think Zonni's gonna be a pretty successful player another late first round pick the Penguins found Kyle Dubas and Cole going to work
And I believe in the Penguins coaching
Coaching depth as well. If you look at it from Dan Muse to Kirk McDonald
I think they're gonna find ways to make all these guys successful if they can help it and at the end the day it is
Up to the players to become as good as it can
But anyways, if you did enjoy the video, I like to subscribe and we'll see in the next one
Peace out. Have a great day as always and goodbye for now
