A Russian drone struck a passenger train in the Volyn region, approximately two kilometers from the Polish border, just a day after Putin threatened war on Europe. According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the locomotive was attacked, but a monitoring group warned the train crew of the threat in advance, so no one was injured. Politico reports that the train in question was en route to Warsaw. The attack occurred approximately 30 hours after Vladimir Putin stated that the introduction of European troops into Ukraine would mean war with Russia. The context makes the attack particularly alarming, observers note. On Friday, Putin claimed that European authorities were allegedly pushing their countries toward a direct confrontation with Russia.
"What are they pushing their peoples toward now? War with the Russian Federation? Now they're talking about how they're thinking about sending troops into Ukraine. That means war with Russia," Putin said. Around the same time, according to Der Spiegel, another train – a special train carrying European politicians, diplomats, security advisers, and scientists – was stopped and partially evacuated near the Polish border due to Russian strikes. Earlier this week, as ARD reported, a train carrying a delegation from Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Manuel Hagel to Kyiv was evacuated due to an air raid siren in Ukraine. Der Spiegel notes that Russia's campaign of attacks on border infrastructure is bringing the war even closer to EU countries. In recent weeks, Russia has already launched strikes on Ukrainian border crossings with Moldova and Romania. As a reminder, the Russian army has targeted Ukrainian railways across the country with its attack drones. Ukrzaliznytsia has gone into high alert mode. On the night of September 13, Russian forces used drones to attack the Yagodin checkpoint on the Ukrainian-Polish border. The aggressor targeted a gas station.
The head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andriy Sybiha, responded to the attack. The attack resulted in a gas station and trucks parked nearby catching fire. Sybiha called the Russian strikes "barbaric." "This isn't just a continuation of attacks on our state borders. This is Putin's terror, knocking right on the doors of the EU and NATO. The Russian barbarians are at your gates, dear partners," the minister wrote. He called on the West to immediately and harshly respond to the aggressor. "Act now: unleash the full force of your sanctions on Putin's aggressive regime. Let Moscow feel the consequences of its terror. Not just half-measures, but uncompromising, powerful steps... Putin must understand that his barbarity will be met with decisive action that will raise the cost of war to an unacceptable level. This is the only way to stop him," Sybiha said. He proposed introducing a complete embargo on Russian goods and a ban on entry for Russians, as well as increasing sanctions pressure on the Russian military industry.
