Ukraine is expanding its fight against Russia far beyond its own borders. Ukrainian drone operators are operating in the deserts of Mali, assisting local forces fighting against Russian troops, CNN reports.
According to the publication, approximately 15 Ukrainian specialists have been sent to Mali. Their work primarily involves supporting, training, and providing operational assistance to rebels in the north of the country. Ukrainian troops are cooperating with a predominantly Tuareg group known as the Azawad Liberation Front. One of the Ukrainian operators told CNN that he coordinates the local fighters' work remotely. He said the drone's signal is transmitted to him via the internet, after which it transmits information about further actions to the operator via radio.
"I coordinate their operations remotely. The signal from their drone reaches me via the internet, and I immediately inform them by radio what to do and where to fly," the soldier said.
He emphasized that he himself does not go to the front lines, since he received the corresponding order from the command. According to a CNN source in Ukrainian intelligence, Ukrainian specialists were also present in Sudan. Furthermore, military personnel from Chad, Niger, and Burkina Faso traveled to Mali to learn how to operate drones from Ukrainian troops.
Ukraine also sent teams of military experts to at least five Middle Eastern countries. There, they trained local forces to counter Iran's Shahed attack drones, which Russia is actively using against Ukraine.
In exchange for military know-how, Kyiv, according to CNN, received security cooperation agreements and promises of ammunition supplies. Conditions in Mali differ significantly from those on the Ukrainian front. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 43 degrees Celsius, dropping sharply at night. Sand and dust pose additional challenges for equipment.
According to a Ukrainian intelligence representative, heat and dust are causing equipment to fail faster. Filters, cooling systems, electronics protection, and batteries have to be adapted. At the same time, the tactics themselves are different. A source told the publication:
"In Ukraine, it's high intensity, massive strikes, constant pressure. Here, it's more of a maneuver war over vast territories, ambushes, route control, working in small groups, and relying on knowledge of the terrain."
According to him, Ukrainians train local fighters in tactics, while Ukrainian soldiers themselves learn from them survival and desert combat skills. Ukrainian military personnel also told CNN about operations around the strategically important town of Kidal in northern Mali.
Earlier this year, Tuareg rebels and al-Qaeda-linked militants simultaneously attacked Russian forces. Russia then accused Kyiv of involvement in the operation, claiming that Ukrainian and European instructors had trained the rebels before the assault. According to CNN, Ukrainian naval drone operators are also located in northwestern Libya. Their unit is using a base in Misrata as a platform for operations against Russia's shadow fleet.

One day, a Ukrainian naval drone carrying explosives eluded its operators and ended up off the Greek island of Lefkada. Greece lodged a diplomatic protest with Ukraine, after which Kyiv officially apologized.
