Oligarch Umar Kremlev, who is close to Putin, paid for hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses for Donald Trump Jr.'s private wedding : he paid for the rent of one of the private islands where the reception was held and guests were accommodated, as well as other major expenses, including the fireworks. Details of the large-scale investigation were published by the influential American investigative journalism website ProPublica. The funds were channeled through a Dubai-based structure linked to the Kremlin-led IBA. The wedding was private, with approximately 50 guests in attendance. Trump Jr. himself later emphasized that it was a small ceremony "for only the closest people." A former FBI counterintelligence chief put the risk simply: "If I pay for your wedding, at some point you're going to owe me something. For the president's son, that should be unthinkable. Period."
The political significance of this story is that Donald Trump Jr. is more than just a relative of the president. By this point, he had become an influential figure within Donald Trump's political circle. The Wall Street Journal called him his father's "most important political adviser," and J.D. Vance said, "I'm confident that without Don's help, I wouldn't be sitting here as the vice presidential candidate . " Kremlev isn't just a wealthy acquaintance of the Trump family. He heads the International Business Association, which was previously funded by the Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom. A month before the wedding, Vladimir Putin awarded Kremlev the Order of Friendship, and shortly before the event, Kremlev was in China as part of Putin's delegation. ProPublica puts the story's meaning in stark terms: "A member of Putin's inner circle provides financial support to the president's son and gains close access to the Trump family." Kremlev, meanwhile, arrived at the wedding as part of a prominent group of Russians, whose presence surprised the other guests. One of those present recalled the reaction: "What are they doing here?"
Among the Russian guests was Alexander Lagutin, a businessman who held senior positions at a Russian defense contractor and a state-owned energy company. Also present was Elena Sobol, a close associate of Kremlev. After the wedding, the Trump family released numerous photos and videos from the event, but Russian guests barely appear in these materials. Meanwhile, Trump Jr.'s immediate family, including Eric Trump and Jared Kushner, attended the wedding. The reaction of Eric Trump's spokesman was particularly noteworthy. When asked about Kremlev, he stated, "Eric has absolutely no idea who this person is and has never heard his name." At the same time, a spokesman for Donald Trump Jr. said: "Umar is a personal friend of Don's." The main question of the investigation is why Kremlev needed to spend so much money. ProPublica notes that Kremlev and Trump Jr.'s relationship appears relatively new, and Trump Jr. clearly didn't need to finance the wedding: Forbes estimated his net worth at approximately $300 million.
