Russian occupiers recruited foreigners to fight in Ukraine, depriving them of food and water and demanding they engage in a "meat assault" on Ukrainian positions. Instead, the foreigners decided to surrender to the Ukrainian Defense Forces. The 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade reported this on Facebook .
"In June, an operation took place that resulted in the safe capture of five Colombian citizens," the statement said.
In particular, the foreigners were taken captive during the operational escort of the SBU's military counterintelligence department.
"Among the captured were two brothers: a younger and an older one. The day before, the younger one was the first to surrender. At his position, he contacted his family and relayed a message about his situation. The family then relayed this message to his older brother. The next day, during the assault on Ukrainian positions, he convinced four more compatriots to surrender," the statement added. According to the commander of the 3rd Mechanized Squadron of the 3rd Mechanized Battalion, call sign "Kuzya," upon surrendering, the foreigners laid down their machine guns and lay down on the ground. Communication took place through sign language. According to him, the Russian occupiers "raked in" these Colombians and "forced them to storm the area at gunpoint." The invaders left the Colombians no choice: either storm the Ukrainian positions or be shot. The Russians gave them neither water nor food.
"They sat for five or six days without water, without food," said "Kuzya."
Thus, as noted by the 33rd Brigade, mercenaries captured by the Ukrainian Defense Forces admitted they didn't realize the trap they'd fallen into. But they later realized that instead of the promised rearguard service, they were in for a "meat assault" in less than two months.
"There was no chance to retreat, as prison or, even worse, execution awaited behind. Ultimately, captivity became the only way to escape certain death," the statement reads. As reported, Russia lures foreigners into war through deception and coercion. They are often promised civilian or non-combat positions, but are in fact sent directly to the front. For example, Russia is recruiting Yemeni citizens to fight in the war, using tales of large cash payments, monthly salaries, and promises of Russian citizenship.
