Ukrainian Armed Forces Colonel Anatoly Stefan "Stirlitz" reported the death of Russian Major General Anton Grunis in the war against Ukraine. Details regarding the high-ranking officer's death are not yet available. The OSINT project Exilenova+ also reported on Grunis's death . Analysts cited an online obituary and described Grunis as a major general in the Russian Armed Forces and commander of the 4th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade. Anton Grunis was born in Kazan in 1979. He graduated from the Kazan Suvorov Military School and then entered the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School. In 2026, Grunis received the title of Hero of Russia.
Putin had previously spoken glowingly of Grunis, describing him as an officer who "fights brilliantly." If the death is confirmed, it would be a significant loss for the Russian command, especially given his participation in the fighting in Donbas. If Anton Grunis' death is officially confirmed, Russia will lose a general who commanded troops in key areas of Donbas and whom Putin himself called one of the war's most prominent commanders.
Media previously reported that the SBU had sent a "black mark" to Russian General Varpakhovich. New details are emerging about the high-profile assassination attempt on Russian Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich , who was shot twice this morning in his home near Saratov. Recently, the Security Service of Ukraine issued a notice of suspicion to Varpakhovich in absentia, and today a killer has already raided his home. The attacker rode up to the soldier's house on a motorcycle and opened fire. One bullet, according to the channel, hit him in the face, and another in the torso. Varpakhovich survived, but is in critical condition. The key detail of the story is its chronology. On August 31, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine announced that they had collected evidence against two Russian military personnel involved in missile strikes against Reuters journalists in Donetsk region and the Okhmatdet Children's Hospital in Kyiv. According to the SBU, Varpakhovich was one of the defendants. The Ukrainian intelligence service stated that Varpakhovich commands the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division of the Russian Armed Forces. According to investigators, on July 8, 2024, he gave the order to launch a missile strike on the Okhmatdyt National Children's Specialized Hospital in Kyiv. Then, according to the SBU, long-range aviation units subordinate to Varpakhovich carried out a targeted strike on the medical facility using an Kh-101 air-to-ground cruise missile launched from a Russian Tu-95MS bomber-missile carrier.
