This rare and original film is a secret Luftwaffe production documenting the development and construction of the Messerschmitt Me 321 “Gigant”.
Created during World War II, the film provides a detailed look inside one of the most ambitious aircraft projects of its time. The Me 321 was designed as a massive transport glider capable of carrying heavy military equipment — including tanks — directly behind enemy lines.
The footage shows the entire process: from guarded facilities and early assembly to large-scale production and operational use. It captures how the aircraft was built using a lightweight internal framework, how its enormous wings were constructed, and how cargo was loaded through its distinctive nose.
Around 5,000 workers, including forced laborers, were involved in building the Gigant — highlighting both the industrial scale and human cost behind the project.
In practice, the Me 321 proved difficult to operate. As an unpowered glider, it relied on complex towing procedures, often requiring multiple aircraft. This made missions risky and limited its effectiveness in real combat situations. Its use remained relatively restricted, mainly in logistical roles.
To overcome these limitations, the design evolved into the powered Messerschmitt Me 323. Equipped with six engines, it became one of the largest transport aircraft of the war and saw more extensive service, particularly in supplying Axis forces in North Africa — though it remained highly vulnerable due to its slow speed.
This film offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at wartime engineering, logistics, and the reality behind one of the largest aircraft ever built.
