The Westwall – Propaganda Film on the Fortification along Germany’s Western Border (with context)

The film “Der Westwall” (1939) was produced in Nazi Germany as part of the regime’s propaganda efforts. It presents the construction of the Westwall (Siegfried Line), a massive defensive fortification system along Germany’s western border.
The version shown here begins at minute 5 and 36 seconds, after the original introductory title cards. These opening texts promoted a narrative of threat from Western countries — a claim that served to justify the regime’s expansionist policies and is not supported by historical evidence.
While the film is clearly propagandistic in intent, it remains historically valuable. It provides rare visual insight into the scale, organization, and presentation of large-scale military construction projects in the late 1930s. It also offers a direct example of how propaganda operated: through selective imagery, emotional framing, and staged representation.
