Car dealers sometimes make ordinary changes to the numbers sound like enormous personal favors. But did the dealership really give you something—or did it simply move your own money from one part of the deal to another?
In this video, Kevin Hunter, The Homework Guy, exposes 10 common dealership “favors” that may not be favors at all:
• “My manager approved another $1,000 for your trade.”
• “We found an extra rebate for you.”
• “We’re selling it to you at invoice.”
• “We waived your down payment.”
• “We got your payment under $700.”
• “We’ll throw in the warranty.”
• “We’ll pay off your trade.”
• “We’ll make your first payment.”
• “We’ll absorb the dealer fee.”
• “I called in a favor and got you a lower interest rate.”
Sometimes a dealership makes a legitimate concession. But a favor is only a favor if your complete deal actually improves.
A higher trade allowance can hide a higher purchase price. A lower payment can hide a longer loan. A lower interest rate can hide expensive finance products. And an “included” warranty may still be added to the amount you finance.
Kevin shows you what to examine, what questions to ask, and how to determine whether the dealership actually saved you money—or simply performed a little “favor theater.”
