Russia has deployed large-scale anti-drone defenses over the Moscow Oil Refinery . A video of the deployment was published on the social media site X Special Kherson Cat.
It is said to be a rare, detailed look at the massive anti-drone defences installed over Moscow's oil facilities.
Previously, they could only be seen from afar in attack footage, so this angle gives a much clearer sense of their scale. However, it's impossible to reliably determine all the design characteristics or assess the effectiveness of a particular defensive element.
The anti-drone nets over Russian industrial facilities were no accident, as Moscow and other Russian regions have repeatedly become targets for Ukrainian long-range drones. The Moscow Oil Refinery is a key component of the Russian capital's fuel infrastructure. It has a processing capacity of approximately 11 million tons of oil per year. The refinery meets a significant portion of Moscow's gasoline and diesel fuel needs.
Media previously reported that Reuters, citing its sources, claimed that the Moscow Oil Refinery had suspended oil refining following the Ukrainian drone attack. The fire reportedly damaged both primary processing units—the AVT-6 and Euro+. As of September 21, 2026, following the attack on the Moscow Oil Refinery, more than 45% of Russia's design oil refining capacity was disabled.
Media also reported that, according to Reuters, Ukrainian drone strikes have disabled the Moscow Oil Refinery for at least six months. The refinery, located on the southern outskirts of the Russian capital, is the largest fuel supplier for the Moscow region. This month, the refinery was hit twice by Ukrainian drones, forcing it to shut down. Ukrainian strikes have already disabled a significant portion of Russia's oil refining capacity, leading to shortages of petroleum products, rising fuel prices, and long lines at gas stations in many regions of the Russian Federation.
