Since the beginning of 2026, Ukrainian Defense Forces have liberated 800 square kilometers of territory from Russian troops , while the infidels have seized 890 square kilometers of Ukrainian land during the same period. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to the head of state, the total Russian advance in 2026 amounts to only 90-100 square kilometers—several times less than in previous years of the war. The president emphasized that the Russian army has paid for these minimal gains with enormous losses of personnel.
Zelenskyy spoke about this in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. The head of state noted that Russia previously occupied 3,000–4,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian land annually, so the enemy's current rate of advance is minimal compared to previous stages of a full-scale war.
"The situation on the battlefield is unfavorable for Putin. He's not winning, but he's not losing either, because for him, human losses don't mean defeat," said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to the president, for the Russian army on the battlefield, "almost everything is standing still." He added that since the beginning of 2026, the Russian army has lost approximately 260,000-270,000 troops for minimal territorial gains. Zelenskyy emphasized that while such human losses do not in themselves signify defeat for Moscow, the overall situation is unfavorable for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The president's statements about de-occupation are consistent with data from certain sections of the front, where Ukrainian units continue to push back the enemy. In the Donetsk region, the Defense Forces are systematically liberating small towns, and at the junction of the Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhia regions, an offensive operation continues, which analysts call the most dynamic in favor of Ukrainian forces.
At the same time, Zelenskyy also touched on the diplomatic track in the same interview. The president allowed a personal meeting with Putin, provided that the main issue would be a concrete outcome of the negotiations, and also stated Ukraine's readiness for an energy truce with the aggressor country if Moscow ceased shelling Ukrainian energy resources.
