A Ukrainian hacker group announced it had obtained a large trove of classified documents on Russian ships and submarines. As part of Operation Poseidon, scientific, technical, and design materials on approximately 70 Russian naval projects under development or modernization were stolen, according to The National Interest. According to published reports, access to documents was gained after hacking several Russian enterprises and research centers involved in naval technology. These included the Rubin and Malakhit design bureaus, as well as entities of Elektropribor and Okeanpribor.
The files contained information about Project 636.3 Varshavyanka, Project 949AM Antey, and Project 955M Borei submarines, as well as Project 22350 frigates. Some of the files, according to the hackers, were classified "secret" and "top secret." The documents included technical specifications, schematics, operating instructions, system algorithms, test results, and equipment reliability data.
"The group stated that it had received technical specifications, operational manuals, structural and functional diagrams, algorithms and test programs," the published report said.
The most serious problem for the Russian Navy may arise in the long term. The obtained schematics could reveal ship design features, the layout of internal systems, and technical vulnerabilities. This could potentially allow adversaries to more accurately determine how to detect and engage Russian ships and submarines.
Furthermore, the documents could reveal the extent to which the Russian defense industry relies on foreign equipment and components. Such information could help identify supply chains and increase sanctions pressure.
However, the leak's direct impact on the war in Ukraine is likely to be significantly less pronounced. The bulk of the Russian fleet operates outside the Black Sea, and the Black Sea Fleet has already suffered significant losses.
Besides, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence has released data on 38 vessels it says are involved in helping Russia circumvent international sanctions, export energy products, and support military logistics, the agency reported. According to HUR, the vessels operate under the flags of Barbados, Russia, Cameroon, Panama, Belize, Liberia, Sri Lanka, Türkiye, Tanzania, São Tomé and Príncipe, Hong Kong, and Palau. Of the 38 vessels identified, 28 are directly involved in exporting Russian oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas, as well as bunkering sanctioned tankers belonging to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet and transporting Ukrainian grain from temporarily occupied territories, according to the intelligence agency.
HUR said those 28 vessels are already subject to sanctions imposed by the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Ukraine.
The intelligence agency also identified 10 oil tankers that are not currently under sanctions but are allegedly being used to transport Russian oil to international markets and deliver gasoline and diesel fuel to Russia.
