The Tsymbulova drone port in the Oryol region of Russia, which was damaged by the Ukrainian Defense Forces, is designed for the mass launch of various types of drones across Ukrainian territory. The destruction of such facilities is an important preventative measure against enemy drones. This was stated by Vladislav Seleznev, a military expert and former press secretary of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on Radio NV .
"We're talking about a massive infrastructure facility designed for the mass launch of various types of drones, not just the Geranium-1 and Geranium-2, but also modifications in versions three, four, and five. This massive facility is located in one of the Russian regions bordering Ukraine. Unfortunately, this isn't the only facility the Russians have built recently, and the drones that constantly fly at us often originate from there," he said.
According to the expert, Ukrainian intelligence is working in this direction, investigating the relevant facilities and identifying weaknesses in their air defense systems. Then, our specialists take over and destroy this equipment. "Why is this important? The fact is that we have limited resources to effectively counter enemy drones, primarily jet-powered ones, that are already operating in our country's airspace. But destroying the facilities where they are stored and launched is, I believe, the most effective preventative measure we can possibly consider. After all, a drone that explodes directly at its storage location, at a base, in an arsenal, or in a warehouse, is a much better option for us than hunting for it within our country, with the attendant consequences of the likely fall of those very drones," the expert explained.
Seleznev emphasized that the enemy is trying to reduce the cost of its strikes as much as possible using drone systems, since they are significantly cheaper than cruise or ballistic missiles.
"But this is a technological competition, and I hope we won't fall behind. And while we're exploring specific solutions to effectively counter jet drones using Ukrainian interceptor drones, we'll also continue this important preventative effort to destroy those very drone ports," he said.
Moreover, the expert emphasized that having its own ballistic weapons would greatly help Ukraine in destroying such objects.
At the same time, we are assisted by reconnaissance and further exploration of the area.
"And as strange as it may sound, despite the fact that the Russian Federation has draconian counterintelligence measures, anti-espionage measures, and certain counterterrorism processes in place—Russia has considerable experience in this area—nevertheless, Ukrainian partisans are operating on Russian territory, investigating these sites, and then Ukrainian missiles or drones, with pinpoint accuracy, strike them," the expert concluded.
