US pressure on Iran has gone beyond financial and energy restrictions and is increasingly affecting the country's civil aviation. Several countries have already closed their airports to Iranian carriers, some international routes have been suspended, and Tehran is trying to prevent a further reduction in air traffic.
According to the Financial Times, the changes follow the expansion of the US campaign against the Iranian aviation industry. Washington claims that the companies and associated entities targeted by the restrictions are used to transport weapons and personnel.
Oman and Azerbaijan have banned Iranian airlines from flying to their territories. Iraq has imposed restrictions on flights from Iran to Baghdad, and Georgia has suspended commercial air service to Tbilisi.
One of Iran's largest carriers, Mahan Air, also encountered problems. The company suspended flights to Istanbul, Ankara, and Muscat.
The new restrictions were preceded by a statement from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He announced that Washington intends to seek the cessation of Iranian airline operations worldwide.
Throughout September, the US also imposed sanctions on dozens of airlines and other entities that US authorities say are linked to the movement of weapons and personnel.
However, Iranian aviation has not yet been completely isolated internationally. Some international flights continue to operate from Tehran's main airport, including to Istanbul and Dubai. Some incoming flights are also continuing.
However, the uncertainty is already impacting passengers. Travel agencies in Tehran are warning that they cannot guarantee the current schedule will be maintained. Of particular concern is the route to Istanbul, which remains one of the most important destinations for Iranian travelers.
Despite these developments, Iran Air and other carriers continue to sell tickets for the coming months.
Maintaining international air travel is becoming increasingly important for Tehran. Millions of Iranians live outside the country, and routes through neighboring countries allow them to maintain contact with relatives and travel to Iran.
The country's authorities are attempting to lift some of the restrictions. Iranian Civil Aviation Organization spokesman Majid Akhwan reported talks with Oman and Iraq regarding the resumption of flights.
One possible solution being considered is relocating Iranian flights from Baghdad to Najaf. This city is particularly important for Shiite pilgrims, but Iranian media outlets suggest that restrictions could eventually be extended to this route as well.
The situation is also creating additional complications for countries with significant economic ties to Iran. Turkey, home to tens of thousands of Iranians and traditionally a significant destination for passengers from the Islamic Republic, is particularly under pressure.
Ankara has already revoked the license of an Iranian bank and restricted Mahan Air's operations. However, sources estimate that Türkiye may attempt to maintain some air travel for humanitarian reasons.
The situation around the UAE also remains tense. Dubai has long been a key hub for Iranian business. Economic ties between the two countries are estimated at approximately $30 billion, so completely severing them could prove difficult.
The new wave of restrictions comes at a time when Iran's civil aviation sector is already experiencing serious problems. Long-standing sanctions have limited carriers' access to spare parts, modern aircraft, and investment.
Analysts estimate that approximately half of Iran's roughly 250 civilian aircraft are currently grounded. Additional damage to aviation infrastructure, including airports and radar systems, has further complicated the situation.
