The Capitoline Museums are located in the Michelangelo-designed Piazza del Campidoglio and are considered the world's first museum, having opened to the public in 1734. They consist of two buildings—the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo—connected by an underground tunnel known as the *Galleria Lapidaria* (Lapidary Gallery). This tunnel also provides access to the Tabularium, which offers a stunning panoramic view of the Imperial Fora from above.
Perhaps the most famous work housed there is the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius; the statue standing in the center of the square is a copy.
The museum also houses the city's symbol: the bronze Capitoline Wolf, dating back to the 12th century. In all likelihood, the original statue did not include the legendary twins Romulus and Remus; these appear to have been added during the Renaissance. 00:06:44 Hall of the Horatii and Curiatii
