Happy to Be Homeless in Vietnam? What’s Really Going On | Documentary

The night before Vietnam's National Day, September 2nd, thousands of people set up tents, spread tarpaulins, and laid mats on the sidewalks of major streets. They slept outdoors, hastily ate packed meals, huddling on the roadside in the heart of the glamorous city. These images often lead many foreigners to wonder: "Does Vietnam have so many homeless people?"
But no they are not homeless. They have homes, vehicles, and families. They are simply waiting to witness one of the nation’s most sacred moments tomorrow morning, the parade passing by.
What about the truly homeless?
They are also sitting there. Also huddling. Also eating hastily. And those very places are, in fact, their homes.
In a city brimming with pride, where is the line between "patriotism" and "having no home to return to"? And what is truly happening behind the radiant smiles on Independence Day?
