In September, the Defense Forces set an all-time wartime record for the number of enemy air defense systems destroyed in a single month. This was noted by military observer Alexander Kovalenko .
Thus, according to available data, in less than September, Russia lost 76 air defense systems. The previous record was set at the height of the Ukrainian counteroffensive in July 2023 – 73 units.
"The Defense Forces' efforts to hunt down Russian air defense systems are yielding results, both in terms of the effectiveness of subsequent impact on the temporarily occupied territories and on Russia itself," Kovalenko notes. In total, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has lost 1,673 air defense units, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. As the observer explains, this includes a wide variety of systems – not only self-propelled anti-aircraft mounts, but also components of some anti-aircraft missile systems and radar systems.
"The Russian army will never be able to restore or compensate for such a quantity of equipment, meaning it will be technically and technologically impossible to return to the pre-war level of airspace closure," Kovalenko concluded.
As reported, Russia has approximately 1,900 missiles of various types in stock and can produce up to 200 new ones monthly. According to expert Bohdan Dolince, using fewer missiles than it currently produces, Moscow could assemble several hundred cruise and ballistic missiles by early winter for strikes against critical and energy infrastructure.
Media also reported that Russian businesses are forced to strengthen their own defenses against Ukrainian drones, as the Kremlin has officially mandated that companies provide air defense. Companies are leasing air defense systems, building their own, or even hiring security guards and shooters to destroy the drones. And this is not happening only on the initiative of companies – Moscow has obliged businesses to take measures to protect themselves, writes The Wall Street Journal .
Last month, the Kremlin issued an official decree warning that companies that fail to provide protection against Ukrainian drones could face temporary transfer to state control. Now, businesses across Russia are leasing air defense systems from defense companies or building their own. Judging by job postings, some companies are even hiring drone shooters.
Ukraine has increased its production of drones, enabling its armed forces to launch massive strikes deep within Russian territory. According to Rochan Consulting, a Polish defense research firm, since March, Ukrainian drones have carried out approximately 200 strikes on Russian oil refineries and hit at least 36 logistics centers, including warehouses of Russia's largest online retailers, Ozon and Wildberries.
Russia's vast size has now become a vulnerability: its existing air defense assets must be dispersed across a vast territory that is difficult to defend entirely.
