Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold positions in Russia's Kursk Oblast near the villages of Novy Put and Politodelsky. This was stated by General Dmitry Voloshin, commander of the 8th Airborne Assault Corps, in an interview with BBC Ukraine .
"Yes, they still exist - positions of the 8th Airborne Assault Corps in the Kursk region. I can even tell you exactly where. It's the area around the village of Novy Put, for example, where we control the entire forest area around it. We also control the area around the village of Politodelsky and the adjacent forest area. Yes, these are small isolated areas in the Kursk region, but they still exist," he said.
According to the commander, about a year ago, the Russians were acting more aggressively and wanted to drive the Ukrainian Armed Forces out of Kursk region, "but they left a significant number of personnel there and abandoned this task." "We, of course, didn't move forward either, because we have our own problems to deal with. From a military standpoint, perhaps they did the right thing: why 'fight' for a couple of kilometers of their territory, which essentially won't affect anything, when they can try to expand their zone of control into our territory? The Russians are trying to create a 'buffer zone' here, looking for weak spots, but they're failing," Voloshin noted. He also added that their main target is the city of Sumy, a regional center on the border.
Recall, back in February 2022, Russian forces crossed into Ukraine from several directions in the north, east, and south, attacking the Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. Around 200,000 Russian troops and thousands of units of military equipment invaded Ukraine—without any justification.
Nearly 30 months into the war, Ukraine finally managed to partially shift hostilities onto Russian soil—the same Russia that had initiated the conflict. To call it a “surprise” is misleading. Russia’s Kursk region borders Ukraine’s Sumy region. Thus, Ukraine’s entry into the Kursk region was a defensive move aimed at creating a buffer zone to protect its cities from ongoing shelling.
