David Hurn (born 1934) is a British photographer whose work spans photojournalism, documentary photography, and photographic education. Born in Redhill, Surrey, he began his career in the 1950s and gained early recognition for his coverage of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, where he produced images of Soviet military presence and civilian response. This work led to assignments for international publications, establishing his position within post-war European photojournalism.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Hurn worked on editorial and reportage assignments across Europe and the United States, contributing to magazines such as Life, The Observer, and The Sunday Times. He became an associate member of Magnum Photos in 1965 and a full member in 1967. Alongside international assignments, he developed long-term documentary work in Wales after relocating there, producing sustained photographic studies of everyday life, social environments, and local communities.

In 1973, Hurn established the School of Documentary Photography in Newport, which later became part of the University of Wales, Newport. His teaching focused on observational practice and the development of personal documentary projects. He has also published instructional texts, including On Being a Photographer (with Bill Jay), and has produced multiple photographic books based on his documentary work. His archive reflects continuous photographic activity from the 1950s onward, encompassing reportage, long-term projects, and educational contributions to documentary photography.
