How did The BRITISH deafeat THE SPANISH ARMADA? - 5 Minute History
The Spanish Armada set sail from Spain in July 1588, with the goal of invading England and overthrowing Queen Elizabeth. The English were prepared for the Spanish invasion and had assembled a fleet of their own ships, led by Sir Francis Drake. The two fleets clashed in the waters off the coast of England in what became known as the Battle of Gravelines.
The English ships were smaller and more maneuverable than the Spanish Armada, and the English sailors used their ships to great advantage. The English ships fired on the Spanish Armada from a distance, using their long-range guns to wreak havoc on the Spanish ships. The Spanish Armada was unable to get close enough to the English coast to launch a successful invasion, and the English ships continued to pelt them with gunfire.
After several days of fighting, the Spanish Armada was in disarray. The ships were badly damaged, and many of the sailors were wounded or dead. The English took advantage of the situation and chased the Spanish ships out to sea, where many of them were destroyed by storms and rough seas. The Spanish Armada was effectively defeated, and the invasion of England had been thwarted.
