In the event of a Russian attack, the Swedish Air Force will engage targets deep within enemy territory, rather than limit itself to defensive measures. The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reports that Colonel Carl Bergquist, head of the Swedish Air Force's Air Warfare Center, stated this. A key element of the concept is the integration of Taurus KEPD cruise missiles on JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets. These missiles have a range of over 500 km and are designed, among other things, to destroy fortified targets.
The Armed Forces also inquired about the possibility of acquiring cruise and ballistic missiles with a range of up to 2,000 km. This refers to procurement plans, not to currently deployed weapons. A radius of 2000 km is enough to cover Moscow , St. Petersburg , Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Samara, Rostov-on-Don, Voronezh, Perm, Volgograd, and Krasnodar with strikes from Stockholm. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Sweden abandoned its policy of military non-alignment and joined NATO in 2024. The development of its aviation and long-range weapons is now linked to the Alliance's collective defense objectives in Northern Europe and the Baltic region. "An attack must be costly," Bergqvist said. He explained that this is a matter of deterrence: a potential aggressor must understand that the fighting won't be confined to Swedish territory. One of the reasons for this revised approach was the experience of Russia's war against Ukraine. The Swedish military believes it is essential to prevent the enemy from gaining air superiority. Strikes against its air bases, headquarters, and logistics should hinder an offensive from the very beginning. In addition to long-range strikes, the concept calls for dispersing aircraft and using highway sections for takeoff and landing. It also plans to strengthen air defenses, counter-drone capabilities, and reconnaissance using drones and satellites.
Recall, The Russian Federation sent an informal letter to NATO warning of its readiness to use "its entire arsenal of weapons" if Alliance countries attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region. This was reported in a statement by NATO spokesperson Allison Hart. According to her, the Alliance received Russia's request and responded. Garth stated that the Alliance strongly condemns threats to use force, including irresponsible nuclear rhetoric. The NATO representative emphasized that the Alliance is a defensive organization, and its activities and military exercises pose no threat to Russia. She also called on Moscow to end its war against Ukraine. Russian authorities have previously accused the Alliance of preparing for the possible isolation of the Kaliningrad region. In reality, however, it is Moscow that is conducting a campaign of hybrid attacks against several European countries.
