Kramatorsk long remained a place that, despite the war, managed to survive the fighting relatively unscathed. However, this year, the security situation in the city has changed dramatically.
New York Times correspondent Olga Konovalova, who was born and raised in Kramatorsk, described life in the city today. On August 4, Russian guided bombs struck residential buildings in the city, including the building where she spent her childhood.
The explosion damaged the apartment. The floor was littered with shards of glass, the kitchen window frame was torn from the wall, the living room windowsill was missing, and the bathroom tiles were cracked. "Nothing prepares you for seeing the place where you were born destroyed by bombs," says the journalist. The author notes that Russian troops are gradually approaching Kramatorsk. She says she's long known that her childhood home could eventually end up in the center of hostilities.
Before the full-scale invasion, Kramatorsk was a city of childhood memories for her. She recalls walks, summer days by the fountain, sledding in winter, trips to the farmers' market with her mother, and family evenings at a Georgian restaurant near her home.
Everything changed on February 24, 2022. Explosions woke her parents in Kramatorsk. They called their son, who was in Mariupol at the time, working as a producer for the CNN team.
The journalist's parents were evacuated. They took their documents, clothes, and cat, leaving the apartment cleaned in hopes of returning soon. However, they are still in Norway with refugee status. Two months after the start of full-scale war, the journalist returned to Kramatorsk to cover the advance of Russian troops in the Donetsk region.
Then Russian troops approached the city, capturing village after village, and shelling became almost daily.
Returning to the apartment, the journalist found it covered in dust. She tried to retrieve family photographs, her father's chessboard, and her grandmother's hand-embroidered bed sheet.
"But it turned out that life doesn't fit into a suitcase, and I had to leave a lot behind," she says.
Meanwhile, the city itself continued to function. Food delivery services were operating, hotels were filled with journalists, and despite problems with fuel and some goods, Kramatorsk was gradually returning to normal life.
After Ukrainian troops pushed back Russian units, residents began to return. Businesses reopened in the city, including the journalist's family's favorite restaurant.
The author compares the situation in Kramatorsk with Pokrovsk, which also experienced a period of relative return to normal life after the first Russian invasion.
However, as fighting approached Pokrovsk, guided bombs began to fly with increasing frequency. In the fall of 2024, the city's streets were deserted, residents began to evacuate, and homes and businesses closed.
According to the journalist, a similar pattern has been noticeable in Kramatorsk in recent months. As Russian troops approached, Russian drones began reaching the city and flying over its districts. Bombs fell in places familiar to the author. This spring, an airstrike occurred on the street she walked along to art school as a child. The bomb fell just meters from the store where she bought a chocolate bar and cherry juice before class.
At the end of September, another fire struck near the journalist's home. A massive fire destroyed several dozen apartments in the neighborhood. The author's home itself survived, but the question of its future remains open.
"My home survived, but will I have a place to return to when the war is over? Deep down, I know how this story will end," the author writes.
