A Garden Beyond the Seasons is an original musical journey inspired by Li Ruzhen’s Qing dynasty novel Flowers in the Mirror.

In this imagined story, a traveler enters a secluded garden where flowers of different seasons bloom together. Spring blossoms appear beside autumn flowers, summer fragrance lingers beneath a winter moon, and the ordinary passage of time gradually disappears.

The music does not attempt to illustrate a specific episode of Flowers in the Mirror. Instead, it draws upon the novel’s spirit of wandering, wonder, transformation, and encounters with worlds beyond ordinary reality, creating an independent story through traditional Chinese instrumental music.

The visual companion is Qian Weicheng’s Profusion of Flowers, a Qing dynasty flower handscroll held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The painting’s gathering of flowers associated with different seasons provides the central visual idea for this album: a garden in which the seasons meet.

Throughout the journey, traditional Chinese instruments unfold in restrained melodies, spacious passages, delicate variations, and long-form instrumental compositions.

A garden without winter.
A garden without summer.
A garden where every season blooms at once.

Let the journey begin.
