Sweden will deploy a Patriot air defense system and around 100 troops to Rzeszów in southeastern Poland to protect a key NATO logistics hub used to transport military equipment and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. The mission is scheduled to begin in December and run through the end of 2026, with preparations underway to extend the deployment into the first half of 2027. The Swedish unit will operate under NATO Air Command and contribute to the alliance’s integrated air and missile defense network. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the deployment is intended to safeguard the logistics hub and ensure that vital military and civilian assistance can continue reaching Ukraine. Sweden’s Patriot system, known domestically as Air Defence System 103, is designed to detect and intercept aircraft, cruise missiles and certain ballistic missile threats. The system will be operated by personnel from Sweden’s Air Defence Regiment, supported by the Blekinge Air Wing. Swedish Army Chief Johan Pekkari said the mission reflects the shared responsibility of NATO allies to protect alliance territory while continuing support for Ukraine. The Patriot deployment will reinforce Sweden’s separate contribution of Gripen fighter jets to NATO air and missile defense operations in Poland. The aircraft began supporting the mission in October, helping protect Polish airspace and the flow of assistance to Ukraine. Poland is also strengthening its defenses along the eastern border, including by deploying its own Patriot batteries to the Lublin region near Ukraine. Warsaw has cited repeated Russian strikes near the border and previous incidents involving missiles and drones as reasons for reinforcing the area.
