A major undercover operation in downtown Orlando.
Officers uncovered drug sales and alcohol permit violations at 12 bars
and nightclubs. Alexis Clevenger live in Orlando now. Alexis,
the police chief saying they're just trying to make downtown safer.
Yeah, Luann, in the last 10 months they've made 2,800 arrests.
Now most of those were related to drug and alcohol violations,
but the chief says that more work still needs to be done.
Orlando police went undercover inside downtown bars and nightclubs,
and what they say they found,
illegal drugs for sale and security rules being ignored.
Investigators say undercover officers bought meth,
cocaine, MDMA, and cannabis at nine places.
Fourteen suspects now face 33 charges.
Police say one of them worked at a business where the drugs were sold.
Officers also documented 19 violations across nine businesses tied
to after-midnight alcohol permits.
Police say some places failed to properly search customers
with security wands or scan IDs.
You're not using a wand to do their whole body,
so you're not knowing if they bring a weapon inside the bar.
And also not using identification card scanners.
So not using ID scanners, that's a concern to me because somebody could
be using a fake ID or something like that to get in.
And outside the clubs?
They went to the parking garages, they went to the parking lots,
the sidewalks, and they ended up making 35 arrests.
27 of those are felonies, which is big,
and they also recovered four firearms.
The chief says they will continue to be proactive.
We're trying to keep everybody safe.
We're not picking on people, we're not picking on anybody,
but we're going to keep crime out of downtown as best we can.
And those businesses that did receive those permit violations,
they'll have to wait for a hearing to determine whether or not
they can keep their after-midnight alcohol sales permits.
