Also developing in Orlando, after 15 years of questions,
Dale Smith Jr. had to answer to a judge today.
He is accused of killing his ex-fiancee, Michelle Parker,
who has been missing for almost 15 years.
And he will stay behind bars for now while the case plays out.
A judge told him he is not getting bond.
This is the first time anyone has been arrested
or even charged in connection to Parker's disappearance.
Fox 35's Marie Ettinger joins us live now.
And Marie, to this day, her body has still not been found.
Right, and Dale Smith Jr.'s attorney told me
today they have always known this day might come,
even though the actual day of his arrest came as quite a surprise.
But he is still maintaining his innocence.
All right, sir, please state your name.
Dale Wayne Smith II.
After nearly 15 years,
prosecutors say they now have enough evidence to arrest the man
they've suspected all along is responsible
for killing his ex-fiancee, Michelle Parker.
Dale Smith Jr.'s attorney, though,
doesn't think they should be quite so confident.
What I saw of the affidavit, it was circumstantial,
and based on my professional belief,
I didn't think that they would be able to meet their standard
if the judge just looked at the four corners of the affidavit.
A judge said prosecutors at least had enough evidence
to get a signed warrant for Smith's arrest on secondary murder charges,
which would normally keep him in jail without a bond.
So the judge explained, the state
and defense can duke things out at a future hearing,
But for now, Smith is staying behind bars.
Mr. Smith, you'll be held with no bond.
Parker was Smith's third fiancée.
They broke up before the wedding.
But he'd been married twice before.
Court records show he married Shannon Collins in February of 2000
and wound up in a military prison that same year for domestic battery.
Collins died in 2001 at the age of 26 while Smith was still in prison.
Collins' mother told me over the phone today she
is elated Smith has finally been arrested.
She said her family is happy for Yvonne, Michelle's mother,
and that although Smith's arrest won't bring Michelle back,
it could hopefully provide some closure.
We spoke with Yvonne yesterday,
just after Smith's arrest was announced.
I was hopeful that this day would come,
but never knowing really will it.
And then you just try to buck up
and just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
We mentioned Michelle's body has never been found.
I talked with a law enforcement expert
and litigation expert about how that might impact this case.
that'll come up at six o'clock tonight.
For now, live in Orlando, Marie Ettinger, Fox 35 News.
