A big story tonight at 9.
It began as a traffic stop for a license plate violation.
And it ended with what you see there.
Milwaukee police officers taking a man,
handcuffed man, to the ground, punching him.
And tonight, that man's family is demanding accountability.
Abril Preciado is here.
And Abril, some video of what happened is making the rounds online now.
That's right.
We don't see the start of the traffic stop or how it escalated,
but we do see police take the 24-year-old Nicholas Beeman to the ground
and punch him now tonight the family has hired a civil rights attorney
and you'll hear from him
shortly meanwhile the police union says
that video doesn't show the whole story it's just 35 seconds
long but a lot goes down quickly this video making
its rounds on social media shows Milwaukee police
officers forcefully grab a man
who's already in handcuffs they then push him to the ground
and repeatedly punch him
when i first saw the video i will say that unfortunately i see a lot
of encounters with law enforcement that don't turn out
in a way that we would expect. But in
this situation, I just couldn't rationalize it whatsoever.
Attorney B. Ivory Lamar says the man
is 24-year-old Nicholas Beeman, who he said is severely injured.
Lamar says this all started
last week at a traffic stop near Palmer and Keith
when officers pulled over a car for missing its
front license plate. Lamar says Beeman was riding
in the backseat next to a baby. I've spoken with
three of the occupants in that vehicle
and what I'm hearing that is consistent is that the officers
were very hostile at the very beginning of the stop
that they were very aggressive with them
and that is kind of what led to things escalating.
In a statement Tuesday the Milwaukee Police
Association said the officer knew Beeman had
a gun in his sweatshirt pocket and though Beeman
was handcuffed the gun still could have caused deadly consequences.
President Alex Ayala said
the officer used controlled strikes,
a defense and arrest tactic taught in the police academy
to obtain compliance.
The strike stopped immediately once compliance was achieved.
Still, Lamar says Beeman is a legal gun owner.
Just like every American who exercises their
second amendment right to bear arms
and has the appropriate permits to carry them.
And that the officers went too far.
And I appreciate the risk that they take on a daily
basis. But I think it's
also important to note that the authority to enforce the law does not
also provide you the authority to disregard it.
And Beeman is not currently in custody. Milwaukee
police say the incident is currently under review,
but didn't immediately respond to our interview
request tonight. Now, meanwhile,
Lamar is calling on police to release the body camera video. He's
holding a press conference on this tomorrow.
In the newsroom, Abril Preciado, Fox 6 News.
All right, Abril, we'll find out more then. Thank you.
