Investigating if the officers in a viral video acted appropriately.
This video has gone viral, as Ben just said,
showing the officers punching a young man.
Jason Calvey is here with what we're learning.
Hey, Kim and Ben, yeah, the police
chief says he hasn't yet seen the video
as Internal Affairs investigates. The police union defends the officers
while the family says they want the officers fired and charged.
This video shakes Milwaukee.
It shows MPD officers hitting a handcuffed Nicholas Beeman.
It was last week after a traffic stop
for a missing front license plate.
Now the 24-year-old joins his attorney
and family outside the District 5 police station.
As a mother, I stand here before you guys.
I want answers, accountability, and justice for my son.
There was no reason for excessive force.
After this incident, my son has been experiencing knee pain,
back pain, neck pain, ringing in the ear.
I want those officers fired.
The Ivory Lamar represents the man
and says the family wants the body camera footage released right away.
If all the naysayers out there on the Internet said,
oh, what happened five minutes before,
you would be, your mind would be blown
to understand what led up to this situation.
So that's why we want every single body camera released.
Because when you see the guns that was pointed
in his face for riding in the backseat of a vehicle,
doing nothing wrong at all, this just shocked the conscience.
The police union defends the officers.
The officers know that, and if you watch the video,
the suspect is reaching around on his back towards the front.
The officer was worried that he was able to reach the firearm
that was in his front pocket hoodie, or the gun can fall off.
So the officer yelled out for help that the subject had a gun.
Then that's when you see the third officer kind of come in the picture,
give some focus strikes.
The attorney says Beeman is a legal gun owner.
The Milwaukee police chief, Jeffrey Norman, says the department
is doing a multi-level review, including internal affairs.
He says it will wrap as soon as possible.
Then he says he'll make any decisions.
Let's be clear about what the video is.
A snippet. Not the entirety of it.
But the chief himself says he hasn't seen the video.
So I asked the chief why he didn't watch the footage.
He says that will keep him objective by not watching it
since he's the one who has to make
the final decision about possible discipline.
He says he wants to make sure the investigation is all done
and all the other videos are reviewed before he takes a look.
Now, the attorney questions how
the chief cannot make time to watch the 30-second video.
And, Ben and Kim, we have some breaking news.
Prosecutors have charged the 24-year-old man
in that video, Nicholas Beeman,
with carrying a concealed weapon.
They charged him with a misdemeanor for that crime in this incident.
Jason, I have to ask, that one video has,
you know, blown up on social media.
Were there other videos as well of this incident?
Yes, there were other videos.
According to attorney Lamar, BeIvory,
Lamar says there are other videos out there that he's reviewed.
And also, it's likely that the police officers had
their body cameras on during this interaction as well.
Yeah, there will be more to this story for sure.
All right, Jason, thanks.
