A new school is coming to Newark today.
City officials revealed plans
for the new Newark University High School.
News 12 New Jersey's Jack Ford was there and shows us what's planned
and when students will make the move.
This plot on the corner of Dewey and Hawthorne in Newark's South Ward
is just dirt and pavement now,
but it's the starting point for a new future
for over 1,000 high schoolers in the city.
The first step of the journey to opening a new high school facility
that will have educational spaces and resources to help students
become college and career ready in the years ahead.
The new North University High School,
the $173 million investment funded
by the New Jersey School Development Authority,
will see the construction
of a 198,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility here. It's set
to open in the fall of 2029,
but after this initial site clearing is complete, taking out
pavement and remaining foundation,
construction is planned to start as early as next fall. But
But it's a timeline the Newark Public Schools
superintendent says goes back a bit further.
I was principal of this high school in 2006 when this school,
this new school, was supposed
to be built.
So to see it being realized 20 years later
as superintendent of schools, well, it's been
a long time coming.
This project is not tearing down the old building.
That's still to be determined.
But once the work is done here,
students from the current Newark University High School
will be calling this building home.
