Peter Sellers - Photographs.

Peter Sellers (1925–1980) is primarily recognised as an English actor and comedian whose career spanned radio, film, and television. Less widely, he also developed a practice in photography—initially as a private pursuit—that later took on a more public role through published work and exhibitions. His photographic output reflected his interest in visual culture and documented both personal and professional aspects of his life.
Sellers’ photography included portraits of friends, family, and cultural figures from the 1960s and 1970s. His work was published in titles such as Vogue, the Sunday Times, and the Sunday Telegraph, and he also produced imagery for advertising campaigns. Beyond commissions, his archive revealed a consistent engagement with the medium, suggesting that photography was an important parallel to his career in performance.
In 2015–2016, a retrospective exhibition titled Peter Sellers – Behind the Camera presented around fifty photographs either taken by him or connected to his photographic practice. The exhibition highlighted his dual role as both subject and image-maker, positioning his photographs within the wider cultural landscape of postwar Britain. It also demonstrated his attention to technical and editorial detail, showing that his photographic work extended beyond casual documentation to form a distinctive, self-contained body.
