All right, big night last night, Fox 5 out in force.
The 81st annual Alfred
E. Smith Dinner was held last night at the Waldorf Astoria in Midtown.
The gala raises millions of dollars for Catholic charities,
and as Good Day's Sharon Crowley tells us,
Pope Leo's recent cancer diagnosis was top
of mind for many of those in attendance.
The city's most powerful and influential gathering here
at the Waldorf Astoria for the annual Alfred E. Smith Dinner.
The police commissioner was honored,
as was Cardinal Dolan and the new Archbishop of the
Diocese of New York.
In a special way, we ask for your blessing of healing and recovery
to Pope Leo XIV. We ask for your blessing upon our keynote speaker,
Cardinal Timothy Dolan,
and our happy warrior, Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Archbishop Ronald Hicks asking the city's
most powerful to bow their heads and pray for the health of Pope Leo.
The pontiff had surgery
for lung cancer this week.
The dinner comes just a few weeks before election day. During a
presidential year, the candidates from each party are invited to come
and speak and gently jab one
another. President Trump spoke in 2024.
Vice President Harris did not attend in person,
but appeared virtually. Tonight,
Irish Catholic comedian Jim Gaffigan took a few of his own shots.
While we were having our entree,
President Trump renamed St. Patrick's Cathedral, Trump Cathedral.
Governor Hochul, Mayor Adams and Senators Gillibrand and Schumer
were all in attendance as well as Fox 5's Good Day New York anchor,
our own Rosanna Scotto.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch got
the Happy Warrior Award given to someone
who demonstrates resilience tackling social and political issues.
You came to us from Chicago, so I imagine
that you thought you already knew what an opinionated city looked like.
We are delighted to correct that record.
And instead of a political speaker,
the keynote came from Timothy Cardinal Dolan.
He just retired from the Archdiocese
and is now a chaplain for the NYPD.
Unlike Mayor Bloomberg, unlike Mayor de Blasio,
unlike Mayor Adams, I really like my successor, all right?
this is the foundation's biggest charity event it raises millions
of dollars for the neediest
of children here in New York City Sharon Crowley Good Day New York

Jose, Joel, is that Mike Woods, Mike Woods, Ryan, Jessica, Inez, Denisa, we
were all there but i just
got to tell you you know the police commissioner she
was funny last night she took a few jabs at
the mayor you know let me just tell you some
of the things that she said listening she says things
got a little hot for me this week anyone hiring you know
because the mayor some of the mayor's
allies were calling for her to uh well
for her to be fired after the shooting last week the ice
shooting then she also said there's a lot of talk
these days that the mayor's friends don't like me
That is simply not true. President Trump and I get along very well.
There you go. She had some great, great lines, a lot of good jokes,
usually like the police commissioner, you know, not up.
Yeah, she's she's very serious.
But she had a little fun last night and it was always great.
She and Cardinal Dolan got awards last night.
Yep, great night. Raising a lot of money.
