For domestic violence
and a familiar face is one of the stars of the film.
Also, a money saving makeup hack.
Learn how to extend the life of your foundation
as you transition into fall.
All right, we've got a great show planned
and a familiar face, I'm so excited for her.
I'll be happy when the commanders win again.
Maybe I shouldn't wait.
We got to wait till Monday night.
OK, all right.
Let's not jinx anything, Chuck.
No, I'm not trying to work out 83 this afternoon.
I hope we get there either way.
It'll be a warmer day and then a cool weekend ahead.
We'll clear out Saturday afternoon, but very cool weekend, dry.
All right, happy Howard Homecoming weekend.
Yes.
Enjoy, for those who are going out.
And also, breast cancer walk tomorrow.
Thank you so much, team.
I mean, speaking of Howard University and homecoming,
we have an alum here, Chantal G. Sasha, starring alongside Eddie Murphy.
Yes.
And more.
H-U.
You know.
You know.
You're going to want to know her because she is doing the dang thing.
Hang around for the Marissa Mitchell Show.
It's Friday.
And we have what you need as we head into the weekend.
So welcome on in to the Marissa Mitchell Show.
And strap in because we're going to start things off
with a famous alum from a local university.
And we're going to wrap things up with not one, but two fashion shows.
One for the women and one for the fellas.
It's showtime and a literal homecoming for a star bison.
Isn't she stunning?
Howard University alumna Chantal Nchako returns
to the Mecca for this week's celebrations.
And you're going to recognize
her for starring opposite Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop Axel F.
What do you think you're doing?
You don't get out of my car.
I'm a police officer.
Well, she's showing
no signs of stopping.
Did I mention that she was also featured in Vanity Fair?
And Chantal recently launched
her very own shoe brand manufactured in Italy.
She's booked and busy, to say the least.
So please scan the QR code to send her a comment or a question,
maybe even your homecoming shout-out.
We're going to read those messages in 20 minutes.
Plus this.
Bursts of joy for the girls and the aunties alike.
Two heartthrobs from two different generations
are in D.C. for homecoming.
I'm going to tell you where you can meet hip-hop legend Method Man
and A Different World's breakout star, Cornell Young IV.
My heart's going pitter-patter already.
And then a local couple gives Rooted and Rhett Heritage a fashion show
featuring their collection and also
they're going to put me on the runway with their
models today. I can't wait to see what they've come up
with. We're going to also end our show
here with our Fitness Flex, a team from
Yoga in the Streets. They're going to be live
in our studio showing that
taking care of yourself is not a
luxury but a necessity that you
can actually enjoy. Now back
to our first guest. Chantal
has done so much and she's just
scratching the surface. You can catch her
in the hit show Diarra
from Detroit that's playing now on Paramount Plus.
She's right there with Diarra Kilpatrick,
Morris Chestnut, and fellow Howard alumna, Phylicia Rashad.
We can talk on the way. I've been.
Oh, no. We just get ourselves kidnapped.
What are you working for?
Chantal, we clearly have so much to talk to. You are doing it best
but first, quick reminder here,
scan the QR code to send her a comment or a question. She's going
to read those in less than 20 minutes happy homecoming thank you
so much I'm excited you
know there are some people
who have never met Eddie Murphy, let alone act with them, tell me
about getting that role of a lifetime
and what the experience was like, well you know my mom
manifested this role for me
because she's always said, oh you're going to work with Eddie Murphy
yeah my dad is from Cameroon
and so when he was doing Trading Places he said, oh I'm an exchange
student from Cameroon, he had that line exactly
so my mom was like, you're gonna work with Eddie
Murphy, I'm like yeah right, you know you're always
like you don't know what you're talking about and
literally I had the audition
and I was like, oh I did this audition and my mom was like you're
gonna get it, I'm like out of all the comedians uh-huh
and it was wonderful wonderful experience
I learned so much, he's a master
and yeah it was surreal, I know you just wanted to sit at his feet
what was one thing you picked up from him
that maybe you didn't know obviously, um going from a
viewer to working alongside him
that you think you'll carry along with you in your
career? Well, many things. He's very
reserved and he's about the work
and he's very quick.
Very quick. And you have to be quick
on your feet when you're working with
him with improv. And so he was
very kind and giving
and sharing. So yeah, it was
a dream come true.
Because you don't have a lot of Hollywood royalties
anymore. That's true.
He's definitely one in a million. He's on
the Mount Rushmore. I feel like I've made it.
Exactly, yeah. With that I was like, you're
in the show as well, you got other legends, I mean
Alfre Woodard first of all, more that's oh yeah
with Dr. [Name], yes, how has that been so far that
experience? It was great. I did the episode on season one
which was great and I had a wonderful
time. I played a dominatrix. The show is about
a divorced school teacher who went on a Tinder date
and then the Tinder date ghosted her. Oh my! And so she's
on this quest to try to find why he ghosted
her and she meets along the way she meets a lot
of um interesting characters, so of course I play
a dominatrix, and I saw the clip I was like, range!
The girl has range, I assure you. I mean you can do
it all. Thank you. Now what kind of research character
um, well I have a dab, a background in
dancing, you know, I was a ballet dancer, um I did jazz
and all that, so yeah, so that was great and
And, you know, I feel like when you're an actor,
you have a lot of different parts of you that you're able to tap into.
You have an excuse to tap into it.
So, yeah.
The sexy side.
Exactly.
All of those things that come down.
It's like, it's that, it means the character.
You're really, really good at it.
Thank you.
Let's get into Howard University and the role that it played.
I'm going to flip the role reversal here in your life, in your career.
Yeah, going there.
Wow.
Well, it's interesting.
When I was at Howard, social media wasn't around that much.
So at the A building, you had to kind of like push your way
to find your classes to be able to like figure your way out.
And I think that really helped me along the way,
like coming out of Howard, going to New York,
having a career in theater, just being trained and then going to L.A.
with I went to USC for the master's acting program.
And so Howard just has it's a melting pot, you know what I mean?
And it's a diverse place,
even though there's all these black people like I grew up in Cameroon.
Do you know what I mean?
But then you get there and there are people from Chicago and Texas.
And I wasn't ingrained in their African-American culture.
Do you know what I mean?
And it was like I grew up in Cameroon.
So coming there and learning that, I learned rap and all this.
It was wonderful.
They call it a mecca for a reason.
I mean, I was at all the clubs, exactly.
I was outside.
I was outside.
But I don't get to have our homecoming.
Okay.
So we'll be there.
Scan the QR code again to send her a question or a comment.
We're actually going to head over to the other side
of the studio to have some fun with you.
We love to have fun on our show as well.
You walked in, me and my producer, Victoria,
we were talking about, oh, my gosh, she's stunning.
She's beautiful.
What is she wearing?
You mentioned the shoes.
You're actually wearing your shoes.
Yes, I am.
So I just got to go to you to find out where you got your shoes.
Of course.
They are fantastic.
Tell us, intern John, joining the party here.
Good to see you.
This is Chantal.
Pleasure, pleasure, pleasure.
Ah, and tell us about your shoe brand briefly.
Okay, so it's Shoe Biz,
and they're inspired by my childhood in Douala, Cameroon.
So you have the zebra print, the porcelain heel,
and my name's Shoe Biz, which is my company name.
Actually, my brother helped me come up with Shoe Biz
because my family calls me Shoe.
Sure.
And then, like, it's like business, like show business, so Shoe Biz.
Well, it's a shoe fits.
Okay.
There it is.
There we go.
It's a shoe fits.
So, yeah, so I wore them today on this show because I figured, why not?
Oh, well, listen, let me, I feel like I need to sit up straighter.
Yeah, I just got Nikes on.
Yeah.
That'd be cool.
And they're made to order, you know.
They're fabricated, manufactured in Italy.
Uh-huh.
And so, yeah.
Incredible.
Thank you.
You're all that.
What are we doing with our lives?
Nothing.
This is Amazon.
I've never met Eddie Murphy.
I haven't either.
Fashion Nova.
Come on.
This is all I got, you know.
Come on now.
We're just getting ready to air
That's how we'll put it.
I have a lot to give.
Let's get to our timelines now.
Things are blowing up all over the place.
We want to talk about some of these hot takes here
with intern John now in the mix.
Singer SZA is doing some good in the world
and coming to the defense of an artist online.
This is after he received some very hateful comments
about some balloon sculptures that he made.
So one user actually dared people
to purchase what you see on your screen here,
saying that they would match the price.
The shade in that is that assuming
the piece would go for little or nothing.
Well, SZA, the singer, called their bluff.
She asked for the artist's most expensive
piece before sharing photos of her new artwork
with a caption that reads, being a hater gets expensive.
That's amazing.
I don't know how much she actually paid for it,
but she stepped into that man's defense.
What do you all make of it?
Well, here's the thing.
They're good.
I saw nothing wrong with it.
I heard the story.
I'm like, oh, they probably look like really bad.
Those look like a Potomac party, you know,
like, I think they look fantastic.
Also, SZA is a real one, too.
Yes, she is.
Good for her for stepping up.
But to the person that hates those, like, you need to hug, man.
I was about to say, don't.
How do you hate balloon animals?
I would buy that person flowers.
Thank you for promoting my artwork.
Exactly.
Yes.
You know what I'm saying?
Free publicity, exactly.
I mean, I just feel like we've kind of lost the plot with having fun
and expressing ourselves with things.
it's like there's so many rules around how to express yourself
and it's taken the fun out
of everything so I think we should be free
to express ourselves how we feel absolutely now I
need to get better at balloon art yeah we need something what
are we doing I'm sure she spent
more than 100 for it so we'll see these are going
to stick around here with me for the hot sheet
because up next the top four things women want
in a man according to a new survey we're going to
a round of mess or message it's gonna get juicy
and then later in on the runway meet the husband
and wife team behind the DMV based menswear brand Rooted
and Heritage forget everything you think
you know about sports coats
because they're going to show just how versatile they can be
and later we're going to revamp that special space
and the dressing room you know the one I'm talking about
why are you looking at me
The Fashion Week designer is here to show us some lingerie
that celebrates all body shapes.
Will I be modern lingerie?
I will.
Today's hot sheets.
I have actress and Howard University
alumna Chantal and Choco in the building.
And media personality, good friend of our shows here, intern John.
Thank you for having me.
You look like you're ready.
You're ready to go off, John.
You're ready to pop off.
You're going to play a round of mess or message.
So this is how it works.
if you like something it's message i agree i feel it
if you don't it's a mess you can say hot mess
if you want to let's start
with judge greg mathis we know he spent 24 seasons laying down the law
on tv but one ruling he can't overturn
is his wife's decision on what happens in their bedroom
take a listen she never said yes i just stopped asking
for it the reality is that um i have a
problem with rejection because i'm scared of the word
no because of the emotion that it gives me
she never said yes i just thought okay now he made
that confession about rejection and how it
impacts their marriage during his family's podcast we
do not know exactly what the request is that
he's making in the bedroom let your mind wander
do the let work with that uh but judge mathis
even going there and talking about
the vulnerable vulnerabilities that he feels about that request
not being granted is that a mess
or a message that's a message i think it's a message as well
as a dude i think it'd be easier ladies if you wore
a shirt with a color on it so we know like
green means good to go red means no and yellow means caution
because as a dude we get in bed
and then like you put your butt against it's like oh it's
on it turns out well my tummy hurts it's
Like, brother, I don't know.
I can barely read English, let alone, like, your body language.
So, like, red, green, yellow shirt.
I think some men know if you walk in with a bonnet and a t-shirt on.
Yes, exactly.
That's not the time.
I mean, sometimes.
How do you see it?
Mess or message?
Him being so open.
Oh, him being so open.
Oh, sorry, a message.
A message.
Yeah, I love him being open because sometimes we don't understand,
we don't acknowledge being vulnerable and having great communication.
I think it's a message, the fact
that he communicated, you know, how he feels.
I know they're grown children, and I, for one,
I'm glad he didn't go into more detail,
because I don't even know what's going
on in my parents' bedrooms, not at all.
Now, not asking for something over fear of being rejected,
that's something we just touched upon.
And now we're going to shift gears and get into this new survey
that apparently says what women truly want from men.
Number one, listen.
Huh?
Listen.
What'd you say?
See? Listen.
The small informal survey was taken by more than 100 women.
The answer, very consistent.
Now, along with wanting men to...
What is that?
See? Listen.
They also want respect and emotional support.
Very few had anything to say about looks
or the size of a man's paycheck.
So you thought I was going to say something else.
For men, mess or message?
Message!
I can say it like
Going down the middle.
It depends on what you're saying, though,
because sometimes women speak in riddles
and expect us to understand it.
And it's like, I'd rather you just tell me what you want
for dinner versus me going through the Rolodex.
You don't read minds.
Or when you say have fun, and I go, oh, I should have a fun time.
And then I learn later, I wasn't supposed to have fun.
Yeah, or your fun is not my fun.
Yeah, I'm listening, but if there's deeper meaning,
again, I'm not going to figure it out.
Say what you mean.
I mean what you say.
Please.
I mean, I feel like we speak clearly.
You guys just don't listen clearly.
Or maybe you need to learn our language,
our love language, how we speak.
You know, because we're doing so many things.
We're juggling family, kids, career, and you guys.
So maybe you can put in a little bit
of effort to understand what we're saying.
Thank you.
I tell someone routinely, you don't listen.
You don't listen.
And I know that individual is watching the show right now.
And it's true because I think sometimes a lot
of men think they know what we're going to say before we even say it.
You open your mouth and it's like, ah.
Yes, that's true.
And you don't finish what you're saying.
And you're not listening
because you think you know what I'm going to say.
Hear me out.
Give me a chance.
You're doing it again.
You're doing it now.
You're doing it now.
But sometimes you know, though.
If you've been with a girl for a minute,
you know, like, this is what's going to happen.
Yeah, you kind of know.
It's the same way.
You eventually learn patterns, and I'm always wrong.
I will say there is a difference
between what I said and what you heard.
Boom.
You know what I mean?
Because sometimes you can say, wait a minute,
that's not exactly what I meant.
So just listen to each other.
Exactly.
That's what it comes down to.
working at the same place as your partner can
be a challenge we know that but you know what's harder
working with an ex if you find yourself
in that situation i'm going to call in an unfortunate one
here are six tips that experts say you can use
to navigate in it one agree on boundaries prepare for
awkward encounters do not involve
your co-workers they're probably already in your business separate
your feelings from your performance,
treat your ex like a colleague, and finally, let yourself
grieve the breakup first. It's okay to feel sad about it.
Now, are these tips a mess or a message?
I mean, ideally, don't do it to begin with.
Yeah. That tends to be easier, but luckily,
everybody's office, everybody's hooking up anyway,
so it's kind of like, you know what I mean?
Mix your honey when you get your money.
No, you can't. Oh, there's a lot of honey
mix in here, I can tell.
I kick some people in the bathroom trying to find it, too.
It's hard.
I think once you cross that border, there's no going back.
Don't cross it.
Or do you stay together at all?
At all.
Don't cross it at all.
I just feel like if it's an ex, leave it in the past.
Uh-huh.
That's it.
Didn't you say, too, in your industry,
in Hollywood, there's a whole lot that goes on,
goes on, goes on, goes on.
Well, that's why I don't date in my industry.
Really?
No.
I just do the work, and then I go home.
Smart one.
Yeah.
You're like, I want a career.
I want to be around for a long time.
Exactly, for longevity, because you never know.
And then the thing about it is, in my career, everything is shifting.
you're an actor you're a director you're a producer
so sometimes what you started
yeah and then in the future that might
be your boss i always say what people know they tell
and what they don't know they make up exactly
and you know the the truth will take forever but
a lie will go around the world twice before the truth can get
her shoes on and my mom always say if you
do nothing they don't have nothing
to say there you go all right well someone has something to
say about it and that's tucker for tucker's sake all right
a couple observations one is uh
unfortunately i've dated like half the ladies in the building
so i've been on the wrong side of
that one joking yeah no look in the rearview mirror
that was a mistake my man yeah secondly
i think uh once i started dating them they became
my boss immediately oh so you should date me
practice made perfect okay uh how about some sunshine
this afternoon we'll get a little bit
the sunshine it's actually going to be about 80 degrees later today
and then it gets real cool
tonight in a very fall-like weekend
but we're dry for howard homecoming football we're dry uh for
the weekend for boat shows and everything outdoors
so it'll be uh only in the 50s but
all right well that's the message thank
you Tucker you gotta go talk to the ladies
don't get in trouble with wifey i got caitlin's
number all right john thank you so much thank you
It's 11.21 and today's Fitness Flex.
I want you to unload the stress from the week.
You just go woosah when Friday comes around.
We have a team from Yoga for the Streets.
They are here to walk us through an in-studio session.
Quick reminder, scan the QR code
because Chantal is here taking your questions or comments.
Girl, you got a steady stream, Producer Vita.
Oh, good.
So we're going to dig into our bag after this.
I am back with actress
and Howard University alumna Chantal Goupille.
and oh we have a Howard student writing us hi
Megan she says how did Howard prepare you for
your career I'm a freshman do you recommend
a creative arts major I do I actually do I think
it gives you the tools and the foundations
to prepare of course you don't know what's going
to happen in the future but you it's good to be trained
so because it's about showing up and
having all the tools to kind of because you have to mold yourself
and I think yeah you can be
multifaceted yeah this is craig now out
of Bowie he says h you you know i had an elective with
Chantal and i had the biggest crush on her never got
the confidence to shoot my shot so happy for
her she's just as stunning as i remember
and might say hello to you this weekend okay you remember
craig i'm outside no but i'm outside oh
and she is stunning so stunning uh sahara writing us from
D.C., loves seeing her dreams
come true. Those shoes are
cute. Yes. Let me hop online
and order a pair. How can people do that?
Yes, on www.
shoebizllc.com.
Wow. Yes.
And you have a new film as well. I do.
I want you to talk about that, too. Yes, it's called
Under the Rain, directed by Fabrizio
Maria Cortese, and it will be
out next month.
And I am playing opposite Connie
Nielsen. Really? So I'm really excited about
that. It's about a woman named Ella,
who is very powerful in Europe, and she meets this painter,
and they fall in love in Rome, and I play her assistant.
It's fantastic, and Connie Nielsen is stunning.
She's a master at her craft, and I learned a lot from her.
All right, well, we've learned a lot about you.
You're certainly one to watch.
Thank you so much.
Watching your star rise.
And also, you're going to be here this weekend as well.
I was outside last night.
I'm going to be at the Westin, too,
so I'm ready for that homecoming event as well this weekend.
And thanks for stopping by and for having me.
Thank you.
Well, the menswear game just got a big refresh.
Thanks to a local husband and wife team.
They are here and up next.
And for the fellas, the couple behind Rooted and Heritage.
They're going to show us three twists on a staple, the sports coat.
Let your body groove.
Talk and dance a little bit.
It's for the fellas.
It's a two for one first relationship goals.
goals we're going to meet the local power couple behind
the menswear brand rooted and heritage and
then closet goals because you all going
to talk about how you can get multiple looks out of a
sports coat you got to think broader yes think
broader i have nathaniel here precious jones
thank you so much for coming thank you are you always
this fashion i know it's a tv thing today
but you all matchy matchy all the time i think we try
to we try to match yeah listen it's working
So tell me about your brand and when it started.
Thank you.
So I just launched my brand this year.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
So like I said, it's rooted in heritage.
We are a classic menswear, really built around a modern professional.
So as a DC professional, my career was progressing.
And I realized I needed better pieces
to move throughout the city, networking.
So I built my entire brand around
the sport coat to show the versatility.
And you know what I've noticed, too,
and you can tell me if this is the case,
that office wear or corporate wear has gotten more casual over time.
So you have to adjust to that as well.
Yes.
And that's why we have to think about different ways
to style the traditional sports coat.
Correct, correct.
And that's one of the most common questions that I get.
How do you style your sport coat?
So that's one of the reasons why I launched my brand,
to give men more versatility through this modern workplace.
Absolutely.
And now you have your woman by your side, Precious, who is here.
And you help with the branding of it all as well.
Talk about your contributions
and what it means to be a couple in business.
Yeah, it's super important.
You know, he is the visionary.
He leads the whole product design.
This is his thing.
And I just saw the potential in it and his passion for it.
You know, he pays so much attention
and detail to the jacket, the pieces.
So I saw that potential, and I, you know, have a background
as well in some, you know, marketing and product development.
So I really wanted to just help and push that forward.
Okay.
Was this how it became a thing, too?
You know this from top to bottom?
Yeah, yeah.
You know, you know.
I mean, he's moisturized.
You ought to take a lot of notes.
You know, it's more than just the clothing, too, both of you.
Gorgeous.
Because how we present ourselves, it matters at the end of the day.
It does.
You're telling a story.
Yes.
What kind of story do you want your models
to tell as we look at some of your photos here?
So, yes, I want my models to really show
the versatility in a sport coat.
So I have business casual looks.
We have polos.
We have knitwear.
We have ties.
Also button downs as well.
So we really want to show the versatility of our sport coats.
So I have two models here,
and that's going to show two different looks.
Bring out our first model so you all can see it for yourself.
And this is kind of a fall edition as well of what you all offer.
So walk me through.
Yeah, so this is Anthony.
He is wearing our Navy Heritage sport coat
in a navy with burgundy overcheck.
He's going for an evening, more date night look, definitely in D.C.
All right.
Talk about the colors.
And I love that you did kind of a mustard yellow look,
a nice pop and turtleneck.
Yeah, so that turtleneck, you know,
it's that time of the season, right?
You know, we want to stay warm as well.
And that color that he chose definitely brought out
the navy in the jacket to really show the versatility.
We also got a nice silk lapel flower there to give it
a little extra touch as he's going on that dinner date.
Now, does the lapel come on and off or is it there?
Yes, no, it's a button.
So you can take it on and off, also move it between jackets.
Okay, can I have you turn around a little bit so we can see?
I mean, the tailoring is top-notch.
Yes, we really put a lot of effort in making sure we give
a great fit that will fit most men,
being that our brand is ready to wear.
Sounds good.
So that's one.
Let's bring out our next model.
Yes, let's bring out Shane.
Shane.
Oh, I love this with the denim this time.
Yes, yes.
Walk me through.
Yes, he's wearing our Mocha Founders sport coat.
Like I said, Mocha Brown.
He goes with the denim today with the nice loafers.
And this is a great weekend look.
You know, maybe he's also going to a networking event or just,
you know, hanging out in the city, grabbing some coffee.
And then also putting the polo under the jacket.
We can't just blaze over that.
Yes, yes.
You can dress it up or down, essentially.
Correct, correct.
You know, so we really want to show the versatility with the jacket.
So I love the way he styled today.
And that's what we want to show.
You know, you can wear sport coat in the office
or anywhere you want to go throughout the city.
If we can kind of zoom back down to his feet here
because you rolled up the pants,
not too high because we don't want wade in the water, right?
Just a little bit for a touch.
But then also the burgundy socks that I can see as well.
Yes, yes.
That was a great touch.
So these are actually our burgundy merino wool dress socks.
Great comfort.
And that color really pops when you wear it with our sport coats.
Precious, how do you see it?
What's your favorite part of both models here
as they walk back out, styling and profiling?
For Anthony, I just, I love the lapel flower,
especially for a date night.
You know, you can give your woman some roses
and then also show that lapel flower.
Now, see, that's how you get a second date.
It's the details for me.
It's the details.
And then I love what Shane is doing with the denim
and the mocha brown here with this heritage sport coat.
It's amazing.
You know, the combination, the belt,
the detailing, he can just really go anywhere.
Yeah.
You know, so I love the colors that Nate chose.
He's looking at more colors to put out later.
Really?
Yeah, these two patterns,
they're so versatile, and I love the patterns.
Absolutely.
You can even do mixing and matching.
You know, I'm kind of looking here.
You can swap, and that's the versatility that we talked about.
You know, there's a, you probably have seen it a dozen times.
When Steve Harvey talks about how you can take,
like, one suit and get, like, five out of one.
But you can essentially do that when you pair things together.
Exactly.
And, yep, I would go even further, right?
You know, when we saw that from Steve
Harvey, which I do love that video,
my sport coats can be worn with denim, high-rise trousers.
You know, the versatility is endless, truly.
We love to see it.
So where can people go look at all of your collection
and make a purchase or two?
Yes, our website is RootedInHeritage.com,
and you can also follow me on all social platforms at RootedInHeritage.
You know, I didn't ask you about the name
of your brand, Rooted In Heritage.
What does that root it in?
Yes, so Rooted is where we come from, and Heritage is what we care for.
From my perspective, Heritage is not a 100-year-old institution.
It is one generation at a time.
So, you know, my original inspiration comes from the men in my family.
I come from a religious background, so dressing well was a way
to show respect for yourself and the occasion that you're attending.
Oh, spoken like a true gentleman.
I love it. I love it. I have to get behind it.
Absolutely. We're precious, Nathaniel. Congratulations.
I've got to give you all a round of applause.
I mean, this came out this year.
That's a huge feat for both, and thank you to our models.
You all look fantastic.
We'll move over Hot Girl Summer
because we're heating up fall with today's revamp next.
It's a lingerie fashion show.
I told you I got something for everybody
with looks for every body shape.
But before we get to that,
we're going to unwind a bit with our fitness flex.
You may actually see this one in your neighborhood.
Get ready to flow with me and the founder of Yoga for the Streets.
I was so
relaxed just
watching
that video.
It only took a few seconds,
which is part of the popular viral series, Yoga for the Streets.
I'm so glad you all are here.
We're here with staff to get to the special mission
that you may actually see in your very own neighborhood.
Sprinkle of Wellness founder
and yoga teacher Brianna Martin is here alongside Jordan.
You brought her here to show us a few poses in just a minute.
First off, talk about the being viral with your videos
and all that you do for the surrounding community.
Yeah, so I have a yoga for the streets.
What I wanted to do is because I work
for the Department of Human Services,
And I noticed that trauma informed needed to be done
and it needed to be brought to the person.
So I noticed that each person was saying, I can't make this event.
I can't make that event because they weren't able
to have the money and the funding to travel.
So I said, let's eliminate all of that and let's come to you
and let's provide you with the wellness and the support that you need.
You're literally taking more of the stress out
of figuring out where to go to work out.
So you don't have that to worry about as well.
Why yoga, though? Because there are so many ways, right, to get there.
Why is yoga a good part to incorporate?
I feel like if we need to connect with the mind and the body,
we'll be able to communicate better.
We'll be able to effectively go throughout our days with our coping
skills and be able to just really just know how to breathe through
the moment as opposed to just always on the go, on the go, on the go.
And just I really just want to teach that.
And I'm also like a mindfulness based stress reduction teacher.
so i teach you said mindfulness based stress
reduction stress reduction okay yeah so i teach
um breathing skills also for people
so they can just know how to do non-violent communication
and just be able to just be functioning
so that's what i was just i just wanted to bring that to
work is everything i think a lot of times even
when i feel myself in the heat of the moment or
something happens i take a moment
and i take a beat to get myself together i might roll my tongue
around three times you know whatever it takes
because that way you can slow down and think
clearly and then move accordingly Jordan you've
been doing this thing what's the best part about
the whole workout routine for you why
do you like it well i actually started doing yoga probably
about um 10 years ago so i've just enjoyed being able
to do it together with family yeah but then
also take it to maybe people
who have never done yoga before that's another thing yes definitely
the exposure that's the first thing
that is the communication part we call it the negotiation
phase when we go out into the street
and they're like i don't i've never done yoga i don't know
and then just talking about hey this is going to help you
and at the end of the session they're
always like thank you i'm glad you talked me into it
because the communication phase takes at least
five to ten minutes before i could even get them
before i can even get them started to actually go
into the class i have to talk i have to say hey i have
this i have you know a stress um a wellness
And this is the wellness bag,
the stuff that you put in the wellness bag as well.
Yes, yes.
I put water, essential oil.
I have some lip balm over there.
I have some hand sanitizer.
I have a nice quote and my information
if they ever need to reach out to me.
I do give them my phone number.
So if they want to reach out to me, I let them know,
hey, you can reach out to me anytime you can.
And some people do call, and I just let them know.
If you ever want to see me again, it's all free.
So I can come right back to you whenever you're ready.
I'm so glad that people actually take you up on it
because I've done that as well, particularly for journalism students.
Here's my number.
Here's my information.
No one ever calls.
No one ever reaches out and I'm here.
So I'm glad that not only you're offering the help,
but people are seeking it when they need it.
So we have two mats here.
Yes.
And our instructor, Brianna.
So, I'll do my best to learn maybe some of the beginning,
the beginner level.
Yes, yes.
This is one of the more nicer beginner level sessions.
So, we're going to stand to the top of the mat.
Okay.
So, this will be the top of our mat here.
Yes, yes.
And we're going to take a deep breath in.
We're going to roll the shoulders towards the ears,
down and back as we take a beautiful exhale.
We can have the palms facing forward or backward,
whatever you so choose.
And when you're ready on the next breath,
let's take our head and bring it down to our chest
and roll the head towards the left or the right,
wherever the mind tells you to do so.
Do you bring it all the way around?
All the way around.
Oh, wow. That feels great. Did you hear that pop?
Did you hear it?
And then when you're ready, go to the other side.
Oh, wow. I just turned on that rotation.
So is this generally how your sessions start?
of the stretching and the rolling of the neck.
To the grounding portion, yes.
And then we raise our arms over our heads
when you're ready, interlacing the fingers
up at the top, and you can swing towards your left.
Ooh, ooh, that feels good.
And then to the opposite side.
Such a nice, nice stretch.
Yes, and as we bring down,
we're going to swan dive all the way down,
have the hands meet the feet.
Okay.
And we're going to...
And I can't touch my toes.
It's okay.
You'll make it.
You'll make it with me.
Oh, yes, yes, yes.
And then we're going to inhale flat in the back.
What would you say as we kind of work through
this as one of the big misconceptions about yoga?
The main thing is I say mindful movement.
I try not to push the word yoga because it is Western
and they do feel that it is with spirituality.
Really?
Yes.
That's the one thing they'll say.
Oh, you know, spiritual.
No, no, no.
and I was like no let's just talk about it
in mindful movement ways let's just talk about
breathing and making the movement and just coming centered
and just let me know how you feel after
wow that's the first time I had ever heard
that because sometimes just the word yoga is a deterrent
for some people yes that's what they say like
a few people have said oh it is I'm Christian I'm
Christian I said well let's just
do mindful movement let's just breathe let's just take a
step back let's just raise the arms
and let's just breathe back into the moment and then they're like
I'm glad I did that. I'm glad I,
you know, did the mindful movement part.
Okay, so we just completed,
I guess what we call the grounding of it all. What's next?
The next part is the standing pose.
So I try not to do anything on the floor.
Hopefully you all are doing this at home.
We are on the street. So I take, we go here,
go into chair pose on the next breath, arms are raised, sits bone back.
And when you're ready, take the left foot back into high lunge.
and then we're going into warrior two taking
the right foot into a left foot in a 90 degree angle
right arm forward left arm back i feel like viola davis and woman king
i got this pose with the palm up peaceful
warrior coming up you look beautiful marissa too
you know i've actually done yoga hot yoga in fact uh
with a friend a few times i was a member of a
studio time before that you all are fantastic i want
to do yoga for the streets i want to be in
somebody's neighborhood whatever where can people go
to learn more information i guess sign up and
check you all out live and in living color okay
so you can reach out to me at a sprinkle of
wellness.com that is my website
and i'm on instagram at sprinkles of wellness for you
and always you better find me before i find you
in the streets that sounds good point taken and
Jordan, thank you so much for coming, ladies, for fun.
Thanks for the work that you're doing.
Thank you.
Yeah, absolutely.
I appreciate that.
All right, so now we want to get to our revamp.
We've been talking about it all morning long.
They are here.
We're going to revamp your lingerie closet.
People are watching just to see this segment.
You have a good lingerie.
That's Akilah Wright.
She is here.
You have some models.
We're going to bring them out in a few.
Tell us about your brand and also fresh off New York Fashion Week.
Yes.
I know. This is my second time in New York.
I did Paris as well. My brand, Delisa Rose
Luxury Lingerie. We specialize in all things transferable pieces.
And what that means is
you can literally go out the doors in lingerie.
Okay. So I think a lot of times when people,
and maybe this is something you can touch upon,
they think lingerie, they think in the
bedroom, not outside the bedroom.
And what goes on in the bedroom stays in the bedroom.
You're saying, no, you want to make it wearable for other things.
Wearable, wearable art.
My recent collection just launched at New York Fashion Week,
the Garden of Delisa.
It literally looked like a botanical garden.
It's wearable art is what I call it.
So I'm known for those pieces where I still elevate
the woman to still feel sexy outside of it.
That's right.
And I've been all over your social media.
I've seen the lingerie.
Thank you.
I had to make a purchase or two.
You do?
They're so pretty.
Like you said, it's the detailing.
It is.
It's art.
It's wearable art at the end of the day.
I love it.
bring out your models. Let's start with the first
one here, and she can really demonstrate
what you're talking about. Yeah, so this piece is called
just, that's Delisa, just what you
see. It's velvet. It's my
loungewear. This is for my... Do you mind if I
touch the velvet? No, no.
Oh, my gosh. Look at how soft that is. It feels so
comfortable. She's relaxed.
Yes. She feels good, and it's still elegant, right?
And that's what you want to, at the end of the day,
listen, after I get off of work with this
shapewear and everything else, I want to feel
comfortable, but I also want to look and feel
pretty. But does this look like a loungewear
Like, you can go out to the grocery store with this.
Listen, there are a lot of velvet suits out there,
and you wouldn't really know the difference.
You've elevated the look, essentially.
I did.
And then the type of design of this velvet is beautiful.
Yeah, it's gorgeous.
It's gorgeous.
Very, very intricate.
Very.
Thank you so much.
Let's bring out our next model here.
I love that.
This is Brandy.
Brandy is wearing a mock-up of the Delisa Lounge.
Okay, I see.
same same floral velvet fabric but she
also has on the goddess chemise oh this is another lounge
you know sexy beautiful yes and i like it too even
though you know it's lingerie and you're
seeing some skin it's still classy it's still classy very classy come
on sleeves so bell you
know really flatter sleeves oh my so it's elevated
and then also looking at the quality of the
fabrics, and that's why I asked to touch the
first models. This will last you
for years. For years. Well, being
an engineer, I do focus on
materials. I'm an engineer by trade,
so I focus on a lot of
quality materials, sustainable materials.
There you go. And also mixing
various fabrics. I think that's in for this
year, because there you got the lace, but then you got the velvet.
And look how these look good
together. The lace doesn't
overshadow one another between the
velvet and the lace. They
complement each other. Absolutely.
Let's bring out our next model.
I want you two to stand together.
Because the other thing about your line
is that you make something for everybody.
Inclusivity is important.
Exclusivity is very important.
All my clients are coming from walks of life,
not just in size, but in personality and also in gender.
So I do gender.
It's inclusive as well.
But look how beautiful.
Are you?
I know they're not my bar.
Are they related?
No.
Hairstyle, everything.
Same hairstyle, everything, yes.
Oh, wow.
They're gorgeous.
so what's next for you what's next we do have
a lot of great things you know moving forward with
some new collections obviously
but i'm just continuing to push in the brand you know doing
what a girl gotta do it's like another
fashion week somewhere on the globe yes
finally any piece of advice because i believe with your segment
and a couple of the segments today
yeah these are entrepreneurs who maybe switched careers
and doing something they always wanted
to do or something new is there a piece of advice
or encouragement you can give to someone I mean I
was developing Delisa Rose because my mother had gotten sick
and I wanted to give her a piece of
me to help her feel relaxed during her transition
so my advice is to find what's in you for your
passion and stick to it don't let nothing hold you back you know try
to work through any obstacles
that comes with entrepreneurship
because being an engineer transferring that to lingerie designer
was an easy pivot, but I still
had to, you know, work hard to get
my place into the fashion industry. Oh, yeah, and especially
as a black woman. I don't think there are a lot of
us in that space in particular.
So, job well done.
Thank you. Ladies, I don't believe you're not related,
but if she says that's the case, then so be it.
And I think we're twinning a little bit, too,
in our burgundy and purple vibes.
Thank you so much. Congrats on all the things.
You all make sure you go and show your support.
That's where you can stay connected.
We'll be right back with your Burst of Joy.
