This week, it's very shocking and sad, you know,
a mother allegedly confesses to killing her five year old daughter
and a 12 year old girl is shot in the Bronx.
Plus, actress Selma Blair is accused of an assault while on a flight.
Right now, Fox 5's crime in the city.
For our first story this week, we begin in Richmond Hill, Queens.
That's where sources say a mother allegedly confessed
to killing her five year old daughter to a 911 operator.
The police sources do confirm
The mother called 911
and told the operator that she took her own child's life.
As those same sources, they say that mom is in police custody facing
questions right now surrounding little Fabiana Cabela's death.
Now, we're getting you a good look at that child tonight
as her grandfather shares she was loved deeply
and that love extended well beyond her immediate family.
The five-year-old lived in a multi-generational home
with her parents and grandparents.
Now, around 7 last night, NYPD officers responded to assault calls
coming from the 110th Street in South Richmond Hill, Queens,
and they report finding the five-year-old unconscious and unresponsive.
Her grandfather, they shared, he was at home at the time
when he was made aware that something awful happened in their home,
and police were already on their way.
By then, they found Cabela in grave condition.
Now, we have surveillance video from yesterday evening taken
from a neighbor's house across the street.
In that footage, you can see the response of police.
You can see a child being rushed into the back of an NYPD vehicle.
And you can also see what appears to be someone being placed
in handcuffs in front of the house where this all happened.
An uncle told us just moments ago he's still in disbelief.
It's very shocking and sad, you know.
Can you describe her for us?
She's a very beautiful girl, you know.
She's joyful.
She keeps my mom and dad happy all day, you know.
They're old, and she gives you a nice hug, you know.
She was a very happy girl.
We are heartbroken. Everybody's heartbroken, you know.
After we learned about it last night when it came.
Now, Fabiana Cabela, she died at Jamaica Medical Center
after being rushed there in critical condition.
A medical examiner will give us the official cause of her death.
We now head to Westchester Square in the Bronx,
where a 12-year-old girl was shot in a park.
A new video tonight showing the moments gunfire rang out
in the Bronx hitting a 12-year-old girl.
All right, tonight, police still looking for the suspects.
Fox 5's Lisa Evers, live on scene with the latest.
Lisa.
Well, Steve and Natasha, right now,
a 12-year-old girl is recovering from two gunshot wounds,
and NYPD detectives are trying to hunt down two trigger pullers
who opened fire in what's called
the Pearly Gates Park here in the Bronx Monday night
without caring who they hit residents
are speaking out hoping that NYPD detectives
take these dangerous suspects off
the streets let me show you what actually happened here from this
new video that we obtained in this video you see four muzzle flashes
from gunfire highlighted by a
white circle at the edge of the park
a moment later you see two figures in black enter the
frame and the picture one crouches down
and places what witnesses tell us was a gun underneath the
car. Video from the scene later shows what appears
to be that gun under the car parked on the street
just outside the Pearly Gates Park entrance.
Within minutes after the shooting, residents tell
us police arrived on the scene.
Crime scene tape marked off the area on Trapman Street in the
Westchester Square neighborhood,
which is in the eastern part of the Bronx. Crime scene detectives
collected shell casings
and whatever they could find that might identify the shooters and their
motive. The NYPD says about 8 30 Monday night
a 12 year old girl was struck by two bullets
one hitting her in her torso and the other in her right leg.
Sources say at this point in the
investigation they believe she walked into what
was an ongoing gang beef and was struck by bullets
who were meant for someone else.
Here's what residents are telling us. It's horrible I actually
heard it when I was going down to my yard I heard it
and I was like those are not fireworks so I
went inside and then like two minutes later i heard the cops
and everything and we just it's
common around here this girl actually saw it
from the window she did yeah and what did she tell you
um she just said that it looked like two young
individuals one shorter than the other um they
point she heard six gunshots
when she looked out the window she just managed to see them throwing
the gun underneath the car
and running in the opposite direction now we're told that the girl
is in serious but stable condition
and there's a bit of a Good Samaritan story here. It was a woman
driving by who saw what had happened
who actually drove the girl to the hospital before an ambulance
could even get here. She's there and expected to make a full recovery.
Detectives are confident
that they'll have everything they need to get
these dangerous suspects off the streets. Over
in Kew Gardens, actress Selma Blair appeared
in court after authorities say she committed a string
of attacks in a plane mid-flight
and continued the chaos after that plane landed. First Blair
was released from the hospital
then she was brought here to the criminal courthouse in Kew Gardens
Queens to be charged with not the alleged attacks
that took place on the air but the alleged attacks
once her flight from Los Angeles landed on the ground here in New York
and inside this courtroom
tonight the lawyers for Selma Blair argued
that she was undergoing a medical episode. Do you
understand miss blair yes
or no do you further understand that you have no communication or no
contact whatsoever with this individual yes yeah
that was the judge issuing an order of protection
for actress selma blair to stay away from one
of her alleged victims today blair herself was
arraigned on two counts in the second degree
on the second degree assault charges she was
arrested last night once her Delta flight out
of Los Angeles actually touched down at JFK Airport
here in Queens. Blair is alleged
to have attacked two flight attendants on that flight and then
once here in New York, attacking a police officer
while he was helping transport her to Jamaica
Hospital and then allegedly attacking a nurse
who was trying to treat her there, kicking that nurse
allegedly in the face, neck and chest.
Blair emerged from the courthouse tonight with an
apparent limp. She did not respond to our question
when we asked what happened on that flight, but
she just smiled at us
the 54 year old celebrity actress has publicly stated that she's been
diagnosed with multiple sclerosis it was something
that went public years ago again her lawyer
indicated that that might have had something
to do with causing her confusion and disorientation
on that flight those are the two words he used now she has starred
in dozens of films from Cruel
Intentions to Legally Blonde to the Hellboy movies now have
a listen in at the communication the audio
between the flight crew on board that Delta flight
and air traffic controllers indicating
there was a problem on board.
We'd like to have some medical personnel at the gate for a couple
of the FAs involved in the passenger incident.
They just need to get a couple of things looked
at. I will pass it along.
Just get an estimated patient count for me, please. How many ambulances
will need? No ambulances,
just some medical personnel available for two flight attendants.
Again, Blair has now been charged here in New York
for the alleged attacks that took place
on the ground. She faces two to seven years
on those second degree assault charges. She's going
to be back here in court in January for these charges.
As for what happened in the air, that
is a federal crime. And the FBI tonight
is investigating what happened there. Those
charges have not dropped yet. We're live in Queens tonight.
Arthur Trian, Fox 5 News. Steve
Natasha, back to you guys. Yeah, Arthur,
tell us more about her court exit. What was her demeanor
like? She was smiling. She did not say a word.
The only word she spoke, we played for you there,
was in the courtroom when responding to the judge issuing
that order of protection, so she was very
careful with her demeanor outside the courthouse when she came out.
Last week, we told you about
a man who was shot by ICE agents in Marble Hill.
Now, we're learning about the condition of that
man, and we've got new video of the shooting incident.
This, as Mayor Mamdani, sounds off
over the federal officer's tactics.
Let's get right to Good Day's Robert Moses, who joins us
live in studio with those details. Robert, good morning.
Tashani and Rosanna, good morning to you.
According to a joint statement from the Legal
Aid Society and Make the Road New York,
which represent Oscar Belgao, he sits in solitary
confinement this morning at the Metropolitan Detention Center
in Brooklyn. According to
the statement, Belgao is enduring, quote,
deplorable conditions at the MDC. His lawyers
say that a bullet remains lodged in his neck.
The left side of his face is numb and he can
barely hear out of his left ear.
They add that doctors say he urgently needs surgery, though
he's not sure when or if that will happen.
He also has a shoulder injury caused by shattered
glass. Late Thursday afternoon, video released by the NYPD,
which was not involved in the initial
operation, shows ICE agents approach Belgal's Honda CRV.
He started to flee. Once the vehicle
moved out of the frame, an agent fired at least seven shots
at the car with Belgao's five-year-old
the backseat. The child was not hurt.
Mayor Zoran Mamdani says that ICE tactics are not
justifiable. They view the law as a suggestion.
There is a reason why the NYPD would not be
shooting at a moving vehicle.
There is a reason why law enforcement agents are supposed to wear
identifiable information and uniforms.
It feels as if you're almost looking at a mass shooter as
opposed to seeing someone
who's purportedly representing a federal agency. We are talking
about individuals in construction vests and long guns.
If you see that image as a New Yorker
walking on the street, how would you know that this is a federal agent?
I am demanding that I
cease their operations in our city immediately
because these operations make New Yorkers less
safe. They leave New Yorkers in a state of terror.
Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin
sees Thursday's shooting much differently.
While he acknowledges that agents did not know that
five-year-old child was in the backseat.
Mullen says that it's Belgao, not the agents, who
endangered that young boy.
The truth is, this guy was an awful human being.
He was a thug. He was a
gangbanger. And he had only been in the country for three years,
and he had this long of a rap
sheet and had been released multiple times by New York State.
At the same time, he was on probation.
So you couldn't have got a worse of a worse thug than Oscar is.
Bronx District Attorney Darcelle
Clark is investigating the shooting according to the mayor.
Separately the mayor says he along with
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch
and the entire police department will review the 24-hour period
from the ICE shooting to the NYPD response to it
and the ensuing protest as well as ICE's use of a
privately owned parking lot as a staging area.
And finally we end at the Detectives Endowment
Association in Manhattan where a detective
who was stabbed while off duty in the Bronx
shares his story for the first time
the first breaking news the suspects accused of stabbing
an NYPD detective just came out of a police precinct
in the Bronx welcome back to the Five
o'clock news I'm Natasha Verma all right I'm Steve Lacey
this comes as the detective is sharing his
story about what happened that day
and what his recovery has been like ever since Fox Life
Stephanie Bertini was there as he stood alongside fellow detectives
and spoke out for the first time
The first thing that I want
to do is thank God I have a second chance at life.
NYPD detective Jose Mercedes speaking out publicly
for the first time since he was attacked in the Bronx.
I'm going to be forever grateful to those people that saved my life.
The NYPD says the detective was off duty
when he was stabbed multiple times during an attempted robbery.
They didn't know at first.
He told them over and over, I'm a police officer,
I'm a New York City detective, and he continued to get stabbed.
Standing surrounded by NYPD colleagues at the Detectives Endowment
Association headquarters in Manhattan, Mercedes expressing gratitude.
I want to thank so many, so many people,
my union, the greatest detectives in the world.
And recounting some of what happened in a news conference.
If we go back to that day, I want to thank that person
that I asked for help and I haven't spoke to him since.
But I want to thank that person that called 911 on my behalf
when I thought I was going to die.
It was October 2nd in broad daylight near East 206th Street
and Rochambeau Avenue in the Norwood section of the Bronx.
Police said after the attempted robbery and stabbing,
the detective even chased those who did it.
He eventually got help and was rushed to a hospital.
I want to thank the five to NYPD officers that responded
and just gave me my my aid
and helped me in this difficult time that I was going through.
Right. I almost died.
I'm Dan Bowens, and that's this week's Crime in the City,
