A community in mourning is also hailing a man as a hero.
Thank God for that father.
He saved a lot of lives yesterday.
On Thursday, 36-year-old Caleb Giamonco followed the shooter
into Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon,
and with his legally owned gun, shot and killed him.
Police say the shooter was first confronted
by a man outside the school driving a pickup truck.
Giamonco was driving by when he saw the shooter fire at the truck.
The quick thinking to observe, to then park and follow someone
into the school is incredible and undoubtedly saved people.
Police say a teacher had already thrown her phone at the gunman,
tackling and struggling with him in the classroom
when Giamonco arrived and fired multiple shots,
killing the 16-year-old.
From the White House, more praise.
We had a great hero that went in and did the business.
He took care of business.
And thank God we had him, otherwise it would have been much worse.
Police say the gunman targeted
a special needs class that he once attended.
Everyone wants to know why, including us.
Three boys were killed, including five-year-old Rome Summer,
his family remembering him as a ball of energy who loved stuffies.
And 25-year-old Megan Lambert, their teacher,
her family saying in a statement.
This was her dream job. Megan was compassionate and had a huge heart.
Police say the shooter still had 44 rounds
of ammunition when he was killed.
