A push for cleaner water.
Can't drink the water.
Everything seems to be telling us I don't drink the water.
That's the goal of a new bill sitting on the governor's desk.
The measure, unanimously passed by the state legislature,
would limit the amount of PFAS in our water to four parts per trillion.
The current regulation is 10 parts per trillion.
PFAS is highly toxic.
It causes such things as an increase in cancer rates for kidney cancer,
testicular cancer, liver damage,
thyroid damage, learning disorders in children.
Clean, safe, portable drinking water
is a nonpartisan issue in Long Island.
The legislation comes as the EPA rolls back regulations
on forever chemicals.
The federal government wants to roll back
the drinking water standards for PFAS.
And while they step back, we need New York to step up.
Environmental experts say new science shows there's
no safe levels of exposure.
Our groundwater is riddled with PFAS contamination.
and we need to have the lowest standards
so we can ensure that all of the water suppliers are
filtering down to below the four ppt standard
and we can be as protected as possible people we talk
to say forever chemicals are a huge concern for them
so they get filtered and quite honestly we do get
tested periodically to see what's going
on the bill would require full compliance by 2029 we've
reached out to Governor Hochul's office for comment
and we're waiting to hear back in Holtsville
Suffolk County, Julia Rose, News 12.
