News: Governor Healey's proposed gas tax holiday hitting a pothole.
State lawmakers say no to her plans
that would lower prices for drivers all across the state.
Boston 25's Kell Thompson at the live alert desk.
Kell: drivers not happy with what they're paying right now.
They are not and you will hear from one here in just a moment.
Scott: Governor Healey's proposal to suspend the gas tax
for two months would save drivers 24 cents a gallon.
Now for somebody with say a 15 gallon tank, that's $3.60 a fill up.
Not a lot, but for heavy commuters,
that adds up. Gas prices have skyrocketed since last year,
largely because of the war with Iran.
Check this out. We're at $4.26 here this afternoon,
41% higher than we were a year ago.
Prices have been ticking down, but not fast enough
to help drivers we talked with this afternoon.
It's ridiculous what's going on right now
with the prices of gas. Everything's going up. Why?
There's no reason for it. I don't understand why it just continues.
Because people are paying it,
nobody's complaining, so everybody just accepts it.
This afternoon, Governor Healey's office says she
is going to continue to push for this relief for people
and remains committed to working with the legislature to get it done.
Healey's opponent, Republican Mike Minogue,
calling it a political stunt, pure and simple,
adding a sad game to play with a hardworking Massachusetts families
who are looking for meaningful relief.
Minogue has also said he'd suspend the gas tax,
which House Speaker Ron Mariano has said would
be fiscally irresponsible, like Healey Minogue would
also need legislative support to make that happen.
We have reached out to House leadership
for more on their decision today.
