A man charged in a shooting that injured
a delivery driver allegedly told police that
he had been hearing voices before firing multiple rounds from a rifle.
Hello, everybody.
I'm Heather Hayes.
I'm Steve Eager.
It's 9 o'clock.
The shooting happened October 12th outside a Cedar Hill home.
A contractor delivering packages
for Amazon was shot twice but survived.
Now, a 33-year-old man, this man here,
facing an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
charge.
Fox Sports' Peyton Yeager has the latest tonight.
Peyton.
And in a police interview, the suspect told investigators
the reason he shot at this delivery driver was because he
was hearing voices that said they were there to kill him.
The suspect, taken to the Parkland Hospital to be mentally evaluated,
he was cleared and then moved here to the Dallas County Jail.
33-year-old Samuel Laird accused of opening fire
on an Amazon Flex delivery driver.
Cedar Hill Police revealing Tuesday Laird fired
at least 10 rounds using an AR-15 rifle.
Evident by the bullet holes in 23-year-old Yermar Martinez's Kia,
her personal vehicle she uses to drop off packages.
In that process, we believe they may have broken up
and those were pieces that struck her.
In Martinez's lower back and also the top of her head.
Injuries she showed us last week.
Tuesday, Cedar Hill Police announced Laird was charged
with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
We don't believe that this was a self-defense situation.
We believe this was an attempt to cause direct harm to her.
According to Laird's arrest paperwork,
Fox 4 obtained on Tuesday, just after 6 a.m. on October 12th,
police arrived on scene off North Cedar Hill Road
to Laird's parents leaving the home with Laird in the back seat.
Police say they believed their son was having a mental health episode
and were taking him to the hospital.
Laird taken into custody that morning.
Just 30 minutes prior, Martinez says she narrowly escaped.
It was dark at 5.30 a.m. as she pulled into Laird's long driveway.
As she got closer to the house,
she says she was confronted by Laird carrying a gun.
Martinez rolled down her window, showed that she was wearing
an Amazon vest, and says she held up the package.
She remembered hearing something in English.
I'm sorry, I'm not speaking English, sorry.
She couldn't understand.
She says that's when shots were fired,
and Laird kept firing until she sped off.
It's the same story she says she told police.
Plus, during the investigation, Laird's parents were also interviewed,
saying their son has not been sleeping and started hearing voices.
We captured this person very quickly
and we provided care to our victim and luckily she is okay.
Cedar Hill police do tell me that they did find the AR-15,
a rifle at the foot of the suspect's bed inside of the home,
and then matching casings on the
driveway. Who the gun belonged to, please tell me,
that's still part of the investigation.
