President Donald Trump is hosting
a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia tonight.
Huge crowds have gathered there to hear
the president speak in less than an hour.
Good evening and thank you for joining us for Fox 5 News at 6.
I'm Rob DiRienzo. Eric Perry has the weekend off.
The president's visit comes as Republicans look to mobilize voters
ahead of the midterm election on November 3rd.
Fox 5's Tara Jabbour is live at the rally,
waiting on the president right now.
Tara, what is the energy in the room like right now?
That's all right.
yeah rob there is obviously a lot of people here waiting
of course to see president donald
trump who we're expecting to hear from here within
the next hour now people started speaking
about a half hour ago we've heard from various people
who are talking about just the republican
party and their goals for this upcoming election
the president of course coming here into georgia
to support rick jackson and mike collins we saw
a line of people waiting to get inside the venue
you here earlier this afternoon.
We got a chance to speak with some of those people who told us
they're excited to see the president here in Georgia.
Now, this is the president's second
stop in Georgia in the last couple of weeks.
Now, the people we spoke to say they just wanted the
chance to see the president speak in person.
Let's take a listen on what they had to say.
Just see him speak. I respect him really much as a person.
I know a lot of people don't,
and like those other people.
But the thing is, I see him as a businessman,
and he's using the country as a business, and I think it's amazing.
And again, the president is expected to speak here tonight at 7.
We'll, of course, have a summary later tonight on Fox 5 News.
But for now, reporting live in Perry, Tara Jabbour, Fox 5 News.
All right, Tara, thank you so much for the latest on that one.
I know there's a lot of eyes on that matter. Thank you.
And on the Democratic side, a big name joined Senator John Ossoff
On the campaign trail this afternoon,
former U.S. Transportation Secretary Buttigieg teamed up with Ossoff.
They hosted a coordinated canvas launch in Atlanta.
Now, both Ossoff and Buttigieg talked to volunteers
and supporters about the issues impacting Georgians,
among them high costs for health care, gas, and groceries.
And that was before sending them off
to convince other Georgians to get to the ballot box.
We did some of our best work here in Georgia
when I had the honor of being your U.S. Secretary of Transportation.
Because you had a senator who had my number
and wasn't afraid to use it
every time there was a chance to bring dollars back
to this state to make people better off.
From dealing with railroad crossings around Millen
to the Five Points MARTA stop right in downtown Atlanta
and everything in between.
And both Democrats are in Avondale Estates right now
for another canvas launch
that's set to end right around 7 o'clock.
And just over an hour ago, Senator Ossoff reacted earlier today
to President Trump's visit in Perry.
In a statement, Ossoff says, quote,
why is the president here to campaign for a congressman
who allows white nationalist and anti-Semitic propaganda
to be produced from his home?
He goes on to question Congressman Mike Collins'
lack of response to those reports.
And Georgia's Republican nominee for governor, Rick Jackson,
spent the day stumping across North Georgia
alongside Governor Brian Kemp.
Jackson started his morning meeting with local voters
over breakfast at Conservative Grounds Cafe
in Fannin County before heading south
for an afternoon rally at the Hickory Flat Gym
in Cherokee County.
Governor Kemp joined Jackson on the stage to rally supporters
and explain why Jackson
is his choice to take over the governor's seat.
Leadership is taking responsibility
when things don't necessarily go your way.
Leadership is about making tough calls when everything is on the line.
and leadership is picking up those around you
when all hope is lost and that is the kind of
leadership that I know Rick Jackson will bring
as our next governor. And meanwhile Georgia drivers
will get some relief at the pump a little bit longer
as Governor Kemp extends the gas tax
suspension here in the state.
The governor announced the extension keeping the tax break
in place through November 30th to combat rising inflation.
The suspension saves motorists about
$0.33 a gallon on regular gasoline and near $0.40 per gallon on diesel.
State officials say the
extension aims to keep money in Georgia families' pockets
while supply chains and prices stabilize.
