Cobb County family hosts final haunted house charity

Every year for the last 14 years, the Cabreras go all out for Halloween, turning their Mableton home into a haunted house, all for a good cause. Though when they pack it up this year, it'll be for good. Even before his kids had the idea to turn their garage into a haunted house, Andy Cabrera always loved Halloween. It didn't matter rich or poor, you always got the same thing when you went to that door. So that's what I loved about Halloween, and I tried to make that impression on my kids. The neighborhood attraction has become a spooky tradition that has people coming back year after year. Each time it impresses me. I mean, it's completely different than last year's, but it's just as amazing. While a family takes donations, they don't charge admission. Instead, for every person that goes through, they put $1 towards buying Christmas and birthday gifts for kids at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Hospitals. Over the years, they've raised thousands of dollars, turning an often scary holiday into a hopeful one. If I knew that I was doing something for a child for their last Christmas, I'd work 500 hours easy to do that. His daughter Lillian says he really does put in the work. She's so proud of her dad's effort to bring joy to others. When he starts, you know, November 1st with a new theme and starts mapping it out on a napkin at breakfast the next morning. This will be the last year of screams ringing through the family's Mableton home. Cabrera says he and his wife's anniversary falls on the week of Halloween. They're ready to pick up new traditions and celebrate their favorite holiday together. I was joking. Some neighbor of mine said, well, you know, I don't know what we're going to do without you guys. I said, well, I got a lot of Halloween stuff. I'll make you a great deal for it. The Cabrera family haunt will close on Sunday, but it'll reopen every night starting Monday through Halloween.
