Surveillance video captures the dramatic moment an SUV lost control
and slammed right into the patio
of a popular Mills 50 restaurant earlier this morning.
The driver managed to climb out of the wreckage
and an unlikely Good Samaritan dressed
in a full banana suit rushed right over to call 911.
Fox 35's Stephanie Buffamanti caught up with our fruit-dressed hero
and reveals why she jumped in.
A witness tells me that the driver was going in this direction,
crossed over several lanes of traffic
and actually hit into a metal railing here, knocking it down.
The good news is that no one was put in harm's way
because this happened so early in the morning.
As far as we know, the driver is OK and no one else was hurt.
But there was one good Samaritan that stood out from the bunch.
All of a sudden, we start seeing that the car is veering off,
driving in the opposite direction.
Five seconds later, we just see
that he's like full suit completely into the modern.
Let's show you that video again.
You can see the SUV ram into the patio of the Modern,
a popular restaurant on Colonial in Orlando's Mills 50 district.
Amazingly, you can see the driver was able to climb out of the door.
And an unlikely Good Samaritan says she was in the car behind him.
And while she may have been dressed like a banana,
she didn't peel away from the scene.
I didn't even think that I was in a banana costume.
Like, first thing that came to mind is like,
I need to make sure this person is okay and I got to get help.
Stephanie Oropeza was getting a ride home after
a Halloween party in Kissimmee.
Without hesitation, she got out of the car,
ran over, and called 911 early Saturday morning.
Luckily, there was no cars coming in the opposite direction.
No one was on the sidewalk.
It was at 4 a.m., so no one was, you know,
eating dinner or anything like that.
Like, it could have been much worse.
Owner Michael Nguyen is traveling and couldn't believe his eyes
when he saw the surveillance video.
He says he's thankful no one was hurt and only the patio was damaged.
The restaurant itself was completely untouched,
and they were still able to welcome customers on Saturday.
I was just honestly just super relieved that,
one, the dining room wasn't impacted.
Nobody was hurt.
It's just a matter of just getting things fixed now.
The restaurant posted this on social media after the crash.
It reads, not all heroes wear capes.
This one was in a banana fit.
As for Oropeza, peeling off that costume was never an option.
I woke up in the morning and I look up to see
if someone had posted about the modern crash.
And then I see headlines is banana hero.
And I'm like, I tell my fiance, I'm like, look at this.
And he's like, oh my God, why wouldn't you have taken the costume off?
I said, I needed to be there fast.
And she hopes to share a positive message,
that helping someone in need should be a no-brainer, costume or not.
I think that when you see somebody in need,
like, it doesn't really matter.
I mean, Halloween's coming up,
perfect excuse to be in a costume and help somebody in need.
I just don't think you need to think twice to be a good person
and see somebody injured and help them.
I reached out to the Orlando Police Department
to ask them if they knew what caused the driver to crash.
We're still waiting to hear back.
