James Copeland will report today.
Ladies and gentlemen,
we've had another very strong earthquake just off the coast of Japan,
very close to where the Fukushima earthquake occurred,
around that plate boundary that separates North America
from the Pacific plate boundary.
Obviously, we have a lot of volcanic ranges meeting this area,
and there's a lot of pressure from all four
or five major plates pushing into this area
near Yokohama near or just south of Tokyo
as well we'll zoom in it's the big boy of the day
you can see it's all the plates
nice imagery every dot you see here is a volcano
these volcanic ranges they all run
to one place right into Japan where they can't stop
building nuclear reactors.
Guys, they're not the sharpest tools in this shed
than I thought they were.
Came in at a 5 on the DYFI,
a 4 on the ShakeMap.
It was offshore significantly enough
that no one felt it.
They gave it a depth of 9.5 kilometers,
which means it was on the continental shelf
if that depth pulls up.
Let's check it out.
Head over to volcanoesandearthquakes.com.
There she blows right there.
This is the Pacific plate.
This is the North American plate coming through here.
This is the Euro-Asia plate
and the Indonesia plate coming through here.
They all form meet right there near Yokohama and,
well, Tokyo, right south of Tokyo.
And there's actually some areas where the plates
are not significant enough to be considered plate boundaries.
They're still forming, if you will.
lots of pressure in this area.
We have a volcano that's erupting, the Acon volcano,
and we have a 6.5 here, USGS main source.
We have this at 9.5 kilometers, 9.9 miles of depth.
It's going to have to be on the continental shelf, very shallow.
We have the USGS coming in
at a 6.5 as we discussed National Research Institute
on seismology coming in at 6.5 9.5 i think
they're copycat the europeans coming in at 6.5
but at only 7.3 kilometers of depth let's get some
detailed information on this quake
and find out what we're dealing with all right we have a very
strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake
and that hit on the 27th that's today let's get some more
information here all right what we have here
a depth of 9.5 kilometers per the usgs only 11
reports of feeling it we have
the closest volcano
which is one much closer 129 miles away
This came in at 5.3 atomic bombs worth
of energy released.
Nothing to screw around with.
If y'all ever saw pictures from Hiroshima or any of the little boy,
big boy bombs that we dropped over in Japan,
this is many times the equivalent of those bombs.
Deadly situation here.
There was no tsunami warning or no tsunami created,
which is unusual based on where this was.
I would call it extremely unusual.
Jumping over to our shake map,
it looks like we have 11 still that reported it.
Well, that's a done deal.
We'll see where they ended up.
Not very close to the center,
and they are reporting about the same magnitude of quake.
not intensive but they definitely felt it
so you can see the reports in light blue here now we have
had seven aftershocks including a 4.9 quake so
this is an extremely active situation and ongoing
we start out with the USGS of 6.5, 9.5 kilometers
not a default plus or minus 4.2
kilometers. Very strange.
The Germans coming in at 6.3, 22 kilometers. Again, very strange.
The Incorporated Research Institute for Seismology coming
in at 9.5 kilometers, a 6.5. The Europeans
coming in at 6.5, 7.3 kilometers.
The French coming in at 5.63, plus or minus 2.9. Default
depth give them a break
then we have the Australians coming in at 6.4 at 35 kilometers of depth
a bit deeper than the rest
of the folks we've got Indonesia coming in at a 6.4
45 kilometers of depth
and then we have a 6.6 being called out by the Italians
very very strange to see them call out
something higher than anyone else
at 18 kilometers worth of depth now
the asterisk here uh depth it has 10 kilometers often means
the depth of the quake cannot be determined with sufficient accuracy
so just taking a look at the
quakes this week didn't have
that seven five everybody remembers this is one of the biggest
ones the six five of the day with some six threes
in there some six fours but that six five is well
right on top of Fukushima, right where they need it, right?
They actually had to put that plant back into operation,
had to turn it back off.
What a nightmare.
We also had that mid-Atlantic situation at 6.6, as I recall.
Tsunami warning, no tsunami created,
and that pretty much covers everything you've seen this week.
Everything else is, well, insignificant
as far as we're concerned right now.
Isn't it crazy?
The west coast of the United States,
even though it's part of the Ring of Fire,
and even though Alaska always gets hit,
and the Aleutian Islands always get hit,
always are hit,
and South America is always hit,
and Central America is always hit,
North America has never been hit.
By hit, I mean a 6.5 or stronger.
There will be a significant earthquake
in North America that will cause significant problems.
We've seen nothing since, well, decades.
That said, God bless you guys.

And do me a favor and share this on Facebook
and give us a thumbs up on Facebook because I'm not suspended,
but I bought a new phone, same phone number,
and the authenticator wants 11 days to authenticate my new phone.
I don't know if it's bullshit or not, but that's what it says.
God bless.
